I haven't read all the replies. But, I saw that Cold Frosty Mug showed up.

Disregard EVERYTHING he has to say!

Based on your original post, describing yourself, and with the possibility that you MAY find someting you don't like,

I think you will LOVE it!

I'll revisit this later, but I'm cooking dinner at the moment. Besides, I can't seem to post a reply without 15 attempts or more!

The biggest issues for me, so far, are:
1) Finding a suitable place to park at night (or you may opt to drive only at night and sleep during the day more on this later). Most truckstops, you may have noticed, fill up quickly by 8pm. Same with rest areas. And with the tolls some states charge, there is NO excuse for not having enough parking spaces.

If you manage to find a spot, you'll have to deal with airport/rock concert volume levels; You're going to actually sleep with that going on?

Everyone insists on running their engine at 1000rpm when they sleep. I do not know why. I guess truckers have fast metabolisms or something.

Last night, i found a nice, dark and quiet place to park adjacent to a hotel. I did not idle (didn't need to) and slept pretty good for 8 hrs.

2) As you've probably noticed, too high noise levels in the cab.

3)Inadequate ventilation in the sleeper. Although last night i was able to open the windows and the sleeper vents because it was quiet enough to do so.

4) Inadequate light control in the sleeper. Sleepers have been around for what---70yrs and they still can't get it right?

5) Inadequate temperature control in the sleeper. Adequate means NOT having to idle.

Other than that, it's pretty fun and profitable. If you're willing to run, any decent company should be able to give you plenty of work (miles).
He said "more on this later".

There's that phrase again.
Give him time!!! He is either worn out from the skate park or getting ready for his new gig.... patience!!!

Left home Sunday at noon bound for West Va. No one there at the reciever for me to talk to, but I've been in that area and from the address they looked like they were right down town. Since our delivery times are not critical I waited outside of town at the rest stop until they answered the phone.
I was right. Downtown. But the gal gave good directions. Bumped the dock perfectly.
WORST UNLOAD I HAVE HAD! I had to unload 96, 145 pound recliners to the back of the trailer. I sweated right through a uniform.
Called in......Go to High Point and pick up stuff to come back to the factory. No schedule; just bring it back.
By 4 PM Monday I was at High Point swapping trailers.....6 PM on the way to Tupelo, MS.
BIIIIIG TRAFFIC JAM! They said it was going to take two hours to get through Charlotte. DANG. So I found a spot on the off ramp and set up to spend the night. I was tired from that dang unload anyway, so I figured I'd get up and drive the 11 hours early.
2AM!........tap-tap-tap. Can you believe it? I'm parked in the middle of nowhere and a lot lizard finds me. I open the curtain, see who it is and close the curtain.
But now I can't get back to sleep. I tried for a while, but no good.
So I get up and do it. By 6AM (7 local) I'm stopped in Georgia getting some breakfast. I stopped before I got to Atlanta in order to let the traffic die out. Short (10 minute) nap and here I go again.
Through Atlanta - only 2 minor jams!....BTW, say what you will, Atlanta drivers can really drive; that traffic MOVES! Until it stops.
Needed another break in Alabama. Sat at the rest stop and drank a coke. Talked with an RVer about his dogs. Checked out his wife while I was at it.
Dropped the trailer at 3PM....home at 3:30.
Called in. Next load leaves at 2PM on Wednesday. Destination: Atlanta.
..........................and it goes on and on like that.

I drive for a furniture manufacturer. I will not drive for a regular freight company. You shouldn't either.
Last year I made 56K$

exactly what I was looking for. and, I suppose, exactly what I was expecting. expecially the last post...very detailed...I guess I needed to hear it right from the source.
...I think that this job is like any other, it depends 95% on the person in the situation, and their attitude towards it.
That's the biggest thing I learned backpacking around the country...yeah, you might sleep in the rain a few nights, yeah, you might go hungry or run into some rude people now and then, but for the most part...
-if you have the spirit for it...
-if you have the patience for it...
-it all pays off in the end.
I'm looking forward to the adventure.
Thanks everyone...see you out there.

Mr Blonde, you give your address as Wisconsin.
Talk to Ashley Furniture in Arcadia before you go out and get your license. they will hire you right out of the school, but not just any school. They'll tell you what schools are aproved.
http://www.ashleyfurniture.com/Caree...PageId=Careers

Find the Driver Pre-employment app on that page.

G'luck!

I do not work for Ashley.

In Atlanta, mix a little rain into the mix and guaranteed multiple fatalities.

I'm really looking forward to the adventure...a lot of the things people seem to complain about, I approach as more of an inner challenge. Small quarters, heat and noise, lot lizards, traffic, etc...
it's not what happens to you, but how you deal with it. There were plenty of hairy situations in my walkabout around the country (downtown l.a. comes to mind...) but you have to approach everything with a humble perspective and patience...

I must ask what are lot lizards? I have heard other slang but not that one.

Thats the best way to put it, as a challange. To me I see myself not getting anywhere unless I take challanges and learn till I accomplish them.
