I too used to run an autoparts run in a 3 state area for O'reilly and for 5 years that I did that my logs were pretty much legal then too because I was usually home every day, I ran an over night run, so I know it can be done. So I guess I am the SOME of the drivers you are refering about. Being in this profession for 19 years I will tell you this at some point in time EVERY SINGLE DRIVER THAT RUNS A LOG WILL NOT BE LEGAL ON IT 100% OF THE TIME!!!! You or anybody else aint gonna BS me on that subject. So don't kid yourself or anybody else.

Wow.. now why didn't I say that.. (That would be covered on the mistakes portion of my answer). UNLESS I made a mistake in the addition somewhere, I ran legal. To try and paint mistakes on the HOS and the flagrant misuse or abuse of the HOS is self serving or just itching for some wizzing contest. You are wanting to argue over semantics.. I'm not going to.. sorry wrong answer.. I've been driving for a little longer than you have (not that it really matters in this discussion) and I can still honestly say that there are a few drivers who run legal and make money.

Foz
I'm not into the semantics of it, Im jsut saying I'd bet you don't hit line 1 as much as you should... don't kid yourself, that paperless log system doesn't record all processes YOU do, it won't show you talking to customers,repairing truck,adjustin load/straps,phone calls,doing paperwork,ect,ect,ect...any of that done 15 min or more needs to be on line 4,It only shows what the truck is doing only, right ?

for example;
So I guess you would go into ts for the night,(up against your 11) log line 1, run in take shower,eat,and bs with the other truckers come back out to truck an hour and 75 latter, now you gotta make a few bus. calls answer Qcom, and repair that tail light that works when it wants to.... You gonna hit line 4 for the hour and 25 that took you to do those things ,then restart your 10 hour break over again??? That would be the legal thing to do. YOU are the man. Not me I'll do that hit the sack all on line 1, be gone, while the guy in the example is sitting there for another 3 hours ,
Hmmm, thats another 150-200 miles down the road, and I still got good rest.
I'm not trying to argue with you because any driver out here i consider my friend no matter what. But I will say most if not all will do or have done just as I said, Im thru with this now.....
maybe

when I first started driving in the late 70's it was a rare driver that ran a legal log book because unless you really screwed up the DOT didn't bother with you.
I used to run around 16,000 +- a month and that wasn't unusual for drivers to do.
Then came de-regulation and pretty much every Tom, Dick, and Harry bought trucks and formed companies and that's when all that pretty much stopped and the DOT stepped in.

Wasn't that the I.C.C :shock:
MY uncle Jack was out here then he retired in '77, man the stories, sleeping under trl in a hamock, bunk-houses at the truck stops, Interstates that just ended in the middle of nowhere,gas rigs.
But he did give me a bunch of 8 track tapes of Gene Tracy and yes my first rig had an 8 track player in it, had to put it in myself even cut a hole for it. It was also up to par with the latest of technowlegy (sp) It had a tachograph :roll: Kinda like the paperless log product spoken about here
only different :lol: :lol:
