Hello everyone,
I got the same sorta questions as alot of others I guess but my situation is I'm 36 years old with a high school education only,I worked in my family buisness till a couple years ago when I decided I was tired of it and was never doing it again, now I'm tired of being a cook and grocery stocker and factory worker. I looked into the paid CDL training option 13 years ago where I'm prehired by a company and get my CDL and go to work but I was married then with a one year old and it just wasn't possible for me to do.
Now I've been divorced for 6 years and after partying a few years have settled down and am tired of dead end jobs where nobody cares about anything but screwing off asmuch as possible and getting a check.
I've worked for a trucking company in their shop for a year, Dixieland Express befrore they sold out and I'm still interested in driving and have a little knowledge about trucks from that experience.
I've been prehired by Star Transport and leave for training to get my CDL early August and was wanting to hear any info about that company and their program if anyone has any and if this sounds like a good career for someone my age in my situation.

Are you asking about the Star based in Tennessee or the one based in Illinois?

The one in Illinois does not pay very good, but starting out you will not make that much anyways. My buddy seems to like them. He has been with them for 8 years now. He gets plenty of miles and has a nice truck.

 

Well I found another trucking forum that's really busy and after reading it awhile every company I can think of was talked bad about, someone just reading that one would believe none of them are good to work for.
Definetly wasn't much help except to point out a few do seem to be worse than others, but not much was said about any of them being good to work for. but they all did come from people who "used" to work there. Everyone has past jobs they hate for one reason or another.

 

Life is what you make of it, First of all you need experience, have to start somewhere. It's a crap shoot, ride it till the wheels fall off.

 

I'm with you there, except the partying. You weren't doing dope during all the party years were you? Dead end jobs with worthless people who want to screw off as much as possible I well understand, and I have a glorious university diploma hanging on my well.

Trucking was my solution 10 years ago. It has been a love/hate relationship, but it's better than a dead-end job at Wal-Mart for sure. Trucking could be for you too. Especially if you don't use drugs.

 

Silvan your diploma is a sign of acomplishment (sp), shows you stuck with things, its not useless, good job :wink: It might come in handy latter in life who knows, Driving experience plus college ed might just mean an operations mgr position or better. just sayin....
