call any of the large carriers and ask to speak to someone that handles the O/Os. That person can tell you plenty of names to get in touch with.
I hope this isn't a dumb question but why aren't these opportunities advertised anywhere? Or, if they are, where?

Not dumb at all. Most of the O/Os are small time 1 to 10 trucks. They can't spend the big bucks for ads. The companies they are leased to don't like / won't let them try to hire the company drivers away from them. Mostly just a word-of-mouth or small ads in a local paper.

The O/O I drove for had 5 trucks leased to Fed-X in Orlando, Fl. and 2 leased to USX in Ga. He needed a driver for one ( team run ) and ask the girl in the office if she knew anyone. Her son and my son go to school together and she gave him my name and #.

The pay ( cpm ) was a little better. Holiday pay ( 6 x $150.00 ) Vacation pay $750/week after first year. 401K, insurance and a lot more freedom.

I met many O/O leased to USX and most had a couple of trucks leased on to them.

Not sure what they require for experience.
There's another outfit north of you with Great equipment and run reefers.
Not sure but I think it's Osborne or something.
Name will come to me eventually :P
Not sure but I THINK U.P Special Delivery has a Terminal in both GB and Milwaukee-Lot of LTL and some linehaul-they used to have a terminal in Milwaukee anyway
I know Osborn has a terminal in Fondulac--not sure about Green Bay.

Here's UP Special Delivery's terminal locations.

There's also Tom Joy & Son in Pestigo.

If this is the case, how do I approach them on the phone? I wouldn't imagine I could ask for phone numbers or names of their fleet owners without a few questions coming up. I have a friend who is a fleet owner and all his trucks are leased through Landstar. I do not meet Landstars hiring criteria, and even though he wanted to hire me, Landstar would not let him.

Thats why you need to ask for someone over the O/O division. That is their division and they want their division to look good and do well. I don't think they would refuse to let a company driver work for an O/O. They just don't want them to actively compete ( steal ) drivers from each other.

Yeah-Osborne is in Fond Du Lac-Used to drive past their place all the time-Just couldn't remember that is was in Fond du Lac.
I've driven with Joy when I was O/O and My run was from up here(Mostly Paper Loads) to either Phoenix or LA but their company drivers mostly run Midwest or East Coast and waaaaaaaaaay back when I drove with U.P Special Delivery when I was a Young Pup. Main office is in Iron Mountain. Like I said-Mostly LTL
Never drove for Osborne but I think they mostly run the East Coast.

Bullet Points

1. OTR experience 14 months
2. Have not driven in over a year
3. CDL lapsed
4. Unemployed for 8 months due to medical reasons
5. Have 1 DOT reportable involving extensive damage to a trailer (no ticket issued)

I will have my CDL back by the end of the month. Looking for a good company to hire on with. Do I have to train all-over again? Basically not too picky at this point (but I'm not a pushover), hoping to find a Wisconsin based carrier (or at least a dropyard or terminal) to get me home on a fairly regular basis, but if it's not, it's not a deal-killer. Thanks for all the advice.

I am well aware of most of the companies, (but not all of them) who either have a terminal in my area of WI or are WI based. My question is do you know from experienece or heard of someone in a similar situation getting on with a GOOD company? Most of the companies I have talked to so far advise me that the accident is a "killer".

Schneider won't even hire me...I say that because you can't turn on the tv or radio, or open a newspaper, without seeing one of their recruitment ads

Thanks to yoopr, Ridge Runner, Fredog, BigWheels for all the advice. I am investigating all of it, even as I type. Anything anyone else would care to add would also be appreciated

I've driven for U.P Special Delivery a LONG time ago and they're solid BUT they're pretty much LTL unless you're lucky enough to get a Linehaul Run(These are pretty much Big Runs) but you're home every night.

I put my truck on with Joy(Peshtigo) in the 90's and they too are solid

Check out the truck stops(Petro in Sturtevant or Holy Hill) and check the board for people looking for drivers. Got that other truck stop on the South side of Milwaukee(Forgot it's name)
