Default Canada

My company is trying to force me into a shitty short run into Canada. I'm estimating that this will pay a maximum of about 9 bucks an hour under the most ideal conditions (quick entry, unload, re-entry to US). My problem is, I know everything will be less than ideal time-wise, and I'll be lucky if this pays minimum wage when it's all said and done.

I've hear horror stories from other drivers about long waits (especially getting back into the US). I'd have no problem taking this if there were some miles in it... just seems like some local work getting pawned off on an OTR driver. They're asking me why i'm refusing, and i've yet to respond.

If your company has their stuff together, getting in and out of Canada should not be a problem, unless you are crossing at the Ambassador bridge. During the day that crossing is a nightmare. Crossing both ways at Blaine (Vancouver) has never been a issue for me. There are other crossing that are not so bad, and some that are bad.

Another thing, if you have anything shady in your background (not suggesting anything, but most felony convictions and some misdemeanor convictions will exclude you from getting into Canada). And do not even think about hiding a conviction, even if it was as a juvenile, they will find it.

Good luck with your situation!

I never gave them another reply as I figured my initial decline was good enough. I'd have to get though Seattle rush hour and enter/exit through Vancouver. I'm not very fond of sit-in-traffic runs paid by the mile that should be paid hourly without question.

It's funny how you can think you're just starting to get some decent treatment from a megacarrier, and the next thing you realize is you've ran less than 900 miles in the last 4 days 1500 miles from home during "peak" season, and your next preplan is nothing but a slap in the face.

Hooray for OTR trucking!

/end rant.

LennyD, fasten your safety belt, it may be a bumpy ride in terms of mileage for the next week or two.

While many major carriers give you the choice to not go into Canada, they also may scrimp on miles for upcoming trips if you say "no" to Canada.

Sure hope the miles come your way right away!

Ya, I'm expecting "the treatment".

Frankly, I don't really care either. If they push hard enough i'll just take my early exit and go somewhere else. I was hoping to stick it out for a year, but it's looking like 9 months will be enough.

The Vancouver entry port is the one I was talking about in Blaine, I have been in and out of that one several times, and never had to wait in any lines, either way. Good luck.

If Blaine gives you worries...go in and out thru Sumas. Quite a bit faster...because it is a little out of the way.

Shoot, that's nothing. A friend of mine got a pre-plan to pull a load from a factory to a warehouse and back. The total trip would have been about 60 miles, from the far suburban outskirts of town on one end to the far suburban outskirts of town on the other, and the load paid 1 mile. 1.

The head of Operations was baffled that he turned down this choice morsel rather rudely.
