WOAAA there, Driver! First, we have ENOUGH examples already! And, second, Mike is STILL trying to get to Corwith, MS!!

But, I just got home.... and I want to go back to THIS one:

I have the answers,I'll be waiting.....
That would be an 36 hour drive time , a 66 hour trip time ( because you add the mandatory 10 hour for every 11 driving and you can break that up how you like) and 1806 miles . From Phoenix,AZ to Los Angeles,CA is 7 hours which needs no DOT break and is 370 miles so i would make the appointment for 10pm Mon, but can legally make at 9pm, Then i would rest from 12- 6am Tue. From Los Angeles,CA to Sacramento,CA is 8 hours also no DOT break needed (dependant upon the driver) and is 387 miles so i would make the appointment for 3pm , can legally make at 2pm .
while all these figures are just estimates i know that more then the afore mentioned can happen in a day in the life of a trucker, but hopefully i got a good grade on this one!

First, I want to quote Mike's response and give an answer.

Are you sure you would want to make the 2nd appointment that close to the first what if you are delayed in delivery, why not get the second off first thing Tues. and then Early eve. Tues for third, that way no stress on Mon trying to make it into L.A with traffic and delays.I know you end up in the same place around the same time but, consider the places that you are going when trying to cut deliveries close...... mike
What if you are delayed in ARRIVING at the first delivery?? (Did you catch the part about picking up 1/2 hour from now in Chicago? And probably leaving Chicago during rush hour? And then, in your example, you seem to think you can be unloaded exactly at your scheduled 2pm delivery time in Phoenix. Almost never happens! You should allow up to ?FOUR? hours for that delivery alone!

Now.... You say Phoenix to L.A. is 370 miles and 7 hours. That's an average of almost 53 mph with NO breaks. Question for you.... is your truck governed? Do you always drive the speed limit? Have you ever been OVER those mountains from Phoenix to L.A.?? [Sorry, I was thinking about the ones west of Kingman, but there IS a good climb here] Will you be HEAVY?? Will you get inspected at the Banning scales? Where in Phoenix is your delivery? Will you finish delivering about 5 pm local (rush hour) and be on the EAST side of Phoenix?? If so.... figure about 30 miles at 20mph. Do you realize that the majority of that trip will be at a 55 mph speed limit?

Now, Mike says,
why not get the second off first thing Tues. and then Early eve. Tues for third, that way no stress on Mon trying to make it into L.A with traffic and delays
Sorry, Mike.... but WHY would you want to deliver in L.A. first thing in the morning and have to fight the traffic OUT OF THERE? IF, you can deliver late in the evening (as the O.P. said) when that is the BEST time to get into L.A. and GET THE HECK OUT OF THERE!

So, the question, Newbie, becomes.... what would be the best drive time from Phoenix to L.A., and how long will it really take you? Then.... how much time will you have left BEFORE you MUST rest, and how far away from the big city can you get (Mon night) in that time before shutting down for your 10. Now... from THERE and THEN.... how long might it take you, at 55 mph and heavy daily traffic on the 99 or I-5 (and which way would you go?) Did you allow for climbing Tejon pass (the Grapevine)... and what time would you LIKE to get into Sacramento?? Also, does the time you get into Sacramento and get "empty" have any bearing on how quickly you can get another dispatch??

Yeah, I give you a FAIR grade for your first attempt, but only because I'm nice!

There is WAY more to this stuff than miles divided by mph. That's why it's called TRIP PLANNING. I didn't even LOOK at the trip from Chicago to Phoenix, but are you sure you'll even HAVE enough hours left to go from Phoenix to L.A without having to shut down somewhere inbetween?

Let's go back to this FIRST one.... if you really want help.... and FINISH the job! Then, we'll get Mike to Mississippi, and all the rest of the examples that are on the board.

Truth be told, though?? You'll learn most of these "hard knocks" things during your training period.

Best of luck to you!

Hobo

It's 75 south out of Jenks, and you're trip is gonna make me go broke paying for fuel running all those extra miles.

Out of Memphis pick up route 78 to 45 to 14 into Demopolis,AL,don't be afraid to get off the Interstate some times, that is a long way the way you routed me.

Oh by the way,my whole trip got changed around so you did all that for nothing, welcome to trucking,I now have to take my empty from Jenks to Greenville,SC care to share the short cut with the rest of the class?
