IMHO, whatever way you can shift it without grinding gears is the best way for you.

I shift without the clutch, but thats what I prefer.

I can't believe a trainer would make an issue out of someone using the clutch to shift.

Everybody has their own personal technique, as long as the shifting is smooth and without grinding, then clutch use or non use is a non issue.

The clutchless method will eliminate some clutch wear though.

Eaton will deny warranty claims if they find out you are NOT double clutching.

Double clutching IS the only way to properly shift. That being said, I don't double clutch! Volvos just rev down too damn quick to be able to double clutch.

It is much easier on the transmission if you double clutch.

Company policy is irrelevant, maintaing warranty is relevant.

Thanks a lot guys....I truly appreciate your words of wisdom. UTurn, I'm actually working on ur method right now.

It's such a great thing to have a board like this where we can get to share our issues, problems, & experiences, and seek opinions, comments & help. I'm starting to actively recommend this site to some of my trucker buddies, so don't be surprised to see a horde of Molson-swilling, maple leaf waving, Oilers / Eskimos jersey wearing Canucks descend upon this board

You would be from Edmonton the rest of us Canucks are Kokanee-swillers and Flames fans

If you really need to NOT use your clutch this is what you do.

Say you have your foot on the brake, and want to "double down".

Take foot of brake, place on accelerator and lightly push down, this will unload the transmission and allow you to take it out of gear. I do a light "blip".

From there(now you're in neutral) rev it up slowly. I like to do my downshifts at the same rpms.

When you're close to your target rpms, lightly push it up against the gear. You can easily feel whether it wants to go in or not. It's better to have a soft feel, grinding it just a touch rather then trying to he-man shift like a hero.

 It's like making love...you behave gently, tickling the gears, and when you find the hole, you just slip it in. She will respond better if you don't try to manhandle her. Go ahead now and power up, but use the same rhythm or she will resist you, when you want to change positions...I mean gears.

 Sometimes you have to give these guys an example they can comprehend.

Same progression I went through. Uturn is right. On downshifting, try clutching out, and slipping in. In no time, you'll figure out how to bump things so you never have to wear out your left leg touching the damn clutch.

The last road test I did, I didn't touch the clutch, and the anal retentive clipboard holder dude didn't blink, because I didn't grind the gears.

Personally, I'm in favor of floating 99.99% of the time, and I almost never touch the clutch except to stop. There are exceptions though. Knowing the exceptions is what makes you a supertrucker like me. Whoop whoop.

What do you all think about these new sticks that are supposed to be more ergonomic and have the bent rod instead of the straight up and down rod. Personally I find they confuse me as to the gear position the stick is in.

The gear pattern still doesn't change no matter how bent the stick is.

Aw heck, every now and then I do the he-man shift like a hero thing and ram-it/jam-it/slam-it into gear. Feels good!  :P
