I did a basic inspection daily, got under the hood every time I fueled up to check the oil, etc. The whole intensive daily inspection deal dates back to when companies were forcing drivers to drive substandard equipment and drive for long hours (which prompted the passing of the Motor Carrier Act of 1935).

I do mine everyday and it's a good thing as I learned 2 weeks ago. I had a seal leaking on my right side drives that was coating my brakes with rear end fluid. Had I gone down the road and gotten on my brakes long enough to really heat them up good, I would have had a fire back there. It doesn't take much heat to set that fluid on fire. It does not take that long to do a pre-trip, I'm able to do mine in 10 minutes now.

I have seen several times a driver starts to roll and the trailer comes off turnin out of the truck stop, a pretrip would of found the fifth wheel pulled, I check my truck before I roll everytime I start to drive, I could be just parked at a rest area for a potty break and I check before I roll to see if my lights are still connnected, I also got into this habit from my trainer, he stressed to do it and do it right, he hit a rock once an while parked lost all his oil and drove off to find a smokinn hot engine so he said to check everything, look for leaks on the ground and turn yer flashers on and walk around the truck.....so I do and its a good habit to follow or next time you loose a trailer in the middle of a turn you will ge this habit... I say do it and it makes you feel good knowing you done it.
I have been driving far longer than you and I have NEVER seen a trailer come loose from a truck yet you have seen several? Riiiiight.

I do a inspection every morning, with a brake system check. {I once needed ALL the brakes and found I had a bad diaphram  }. Do the full pedal pressure tests.
I also do a walk around after loading and when fueling. It takes 30 seconds. Its a lot easier and cheaper when you find stuff wrong...
