cost of being broke down
Hi all, just thought you might want to think about how much it cost being broke down. Our company will pay for the motel room at 85.00 per night. the rest is up to us. now we deceided to rent a car, and go shopping, so that was just money out of our pocket. but my point is we've been down for four day's , so that is equal to 800 to 1000 bucks out of our pocket in wages. all i'm saying is put some money asside for emergencies, as you never know when your going to need it.

Not to knock you, but that's covenant transport.
You should seriously consider Conway truckload or Old Dominion among others.
My last company paid $15 something per hour for every hour broke down in addition to hotels. I only had to use it twice---total was 4 hours.

Don't know how Conway truckload does is but I like the way Conway LTL handles a breakdown. They just send a tow truck to the nearest terminal and tow a truck to you and then they take the broken down truck back to the terminal and you are on your way so you don't have much waiting time. If I remember right you have to give them the first hour then you go on the clock.

That's what I like about here at Superior Carriers... The moment I go into a breakdown situation, I'm on the clock until either the truck is fixed or I go into a hotel at which time I go on layover pay. Worked out real nice when I broke down in Alabama for four days a few months ago .

Shorter breakdowns do give you the opportunity to do a 34 hour restart, so it's not a total loss.

Yep, that's the only way to truck. But too many guys in this biz like sitting around for peanuts.

soon as i break down company has me on layover pay, for every 24 hours not in truck i get paid starting as soon as i send in macro to breakdown, company pays for all taxis to a motel and back to shop, pays for the best hotel in town, not a scuzzy one unless thats all their is in town... most of the time i can get a advance on my layover and I can draw as much as I need or just get the perdium part at 40 something a day if I want money for anything which i always have enough just because you never know when you break down.... I make more driving but not much more so its all about the same, plus i reset my clock get a real bed to sleep in and watch a bigger tv , nice warm clean shower and go to the bar so its like a mini vacation to me.....

That is exactly how I saw (longer than 4 hour) breakdowns.

When my truck breaks down it goes like this:
Call 1-800 number using company provided Nextel. Ask for road rescue, give info, sit back and get paid by the hour waiting on service. Need towed? No problem, paid by the hour until truck is fixed, even if I have to get a motel, which they pay for. trailer breaks down, and Reefers like to do that, same thing.

the mill im based at shut down for a week because this great nafta deal has made lumber too cheap to pay good wages to american workers. half of our lumber market was given to canada by the "world court"
i didnt hesitate to take the week off and colect 2/3 pay for vacation pay.i could be running all over the nw if i so chose.
if you have a job where you cant afford to take 4 days off and you have a year of experience you should quit right away. team drivers ? 24/7 ? get real, your valuable enough to have a good job.
