If one were interested in becoming involved with the DOT, how would he or she get there?
No, Im happy with my job. Im just curious how DOT officers get that job. What are the requirements and what kind of experience is needed. Are they former truck drivers?

I believe a DOT officer had to be a state trooper first

It depends on what job you are looking at doing.
Scale House employees often times are not really LEO's.

"If one were interested in becoming involved with the DOT, how would he or she get there?" Check your state's job listing, most state commercial truck inspectors have not been state troopers first, ditto scalehouse/POE workers. BOL

Commercial Vehicle Enforcement officers in WA. are part of the State patrol. They have been able to carry firearms for a few years now.
There's a website in WA. that you can go to, and it will tell you the long list of requirements to be a CVE officer.

Missouri is the same, they have to be state troopers.
You can be hired as a D.O.T officer, but you have to complete traning, and become a state trooper before you can be assigned to that area. I tryed that myself two years ago.

Why don't you call your state's Department of Public Safety or Highway Patrol and ask?? Their website my very well contain the information that you are seeking!!
I'm by no means an expert here, but as far as I know, most states require that you have at least a couple of years of college under your belt. Texas requires that you have at least 90 hours of education from an accredited college or university, or no less than 36mos. experience as a commissioned police officer. |
