This is a big ordeal. In a nutshell the FMCSA wants to impose a black box in trucks. Now, The box would be in trucks who's companies safety records are not quite up to snuff per say. I believe the current count of carriers right now who would have to have it installed is 9,000 or some ridiculous number.

Basically its a box that will track your drive time. stop time etc.. It will be your logbook. Big uproar right now. For you all who have XM in your truck listen to Dave Nemo in the morning.

Currently it is being reviewed by the FMCSA. There is a long process to actually make this go into effect. Right now they are looking for comments as to why they should or why they shouldn't adopt this policy.

They are also looking at speed limiters in trucks again as well. This is a proposed rule making as well. Again they are looking for comments on this. They are proposing making all trucks have speeds no higher than 68mph.

The ATA (American trucking association) is leading the fight for this with 9 major carriers and other organizations such as MATD and a few others.

You all should read this and make your opinion on this. This is going to be a big deal even though its a few years before it actually goes into effect. Of course if there is enough negativity it may not go into effect.

I have enclosed the links for you to make your comments to the FMCSA. You big board moderators should also do this as well and maybe offer your insight on this post for some of the new guys/gals who are coming into the industry and what impacts it may make.

Follow the link on the bottom and make sure you put in docket number.

Do the same with this one.

I had to use one of the spares today and it had this black box mounted on the windshield. I didn't know what it was, but I was examining when I got to my destination and quess what- it's a camera! Come to find out they can turn that thing on at anytime and see what the truck is doing- following distance, speed, everything I see, the safety man can see on his computer screen in real time. How do you like that?

we run paperless logs with a stellar safety record and love it, pretrip and all info takes under a minute at startup to feed in and less than that to post and log off at the other end.

of course I company drive and never come close to HOS issues, OTR might be a different mentality of checking up on drivers not helping them save time.

I do know that Werner runs paperless logs in all their trucks. From the drivers that I have talked to at Werner they said that sometimes the paperless logs help and sometimes they don't. There is no way of cheating on them. The company says that it increases driver productivey by saving them time through not have to log it on paper  I have also heard rumors that with the paperless logs it will shut your truck down automatically after the 14 hour rule.

the truck being shut down after 14 hours is a myth, because of the safety hazzard it would be.I have heard there is a way to cheat a paperless log .
