Well.....I like everyones attitude here! I understand each of ya's perspective - which is what makes the decision so difficult for me. I'm not rushing anything. Actually, I just got back home from makin a run with my dad. We unloaded in Jackson, TN about 8:30 thursday morning and swapped our flatbed for a double drop rgn, and headed off to Cleveland, TN to pick-up some concrete trucks my dad is moving around for a client. Looks like we are gonna be busy moving lots of equipment from that job site back down here for the next couple weeks. Seeing that it is a fairly short run I will probably be helping him out with it a couple times a week.
It was definately a fun time! We were in a hurry to make it there cause we had to try and get it loaded before we ran out of daylight. We ended up running out of light and had our flashlight piss out on us! If any of ya are familiar with operating a mechanical removable goose neck, you probably understand that it wasn't much fun trying to remove and re-hook the neck on that baby in the dark! Needless to say, we ended up taking care of business! I guess the highlight of the trip for me though was going up and over Monteagle on 24 just before Chattanooga. That can definately work on ur nerves a lil bit! After all was said and done, I enjoyed making the trip and my dad sure appreciated the extra help and company. I look forward to making a few more of these runs while I try to decide what I am gonna do. Still lots of decisions to make :!:

Ya Know... This is kind of tough... Definately no disrespect to you OR your dad, but don't let your relationship with your dad be an excuse for you're not doing this thing on your own. I mean, is this a ligitimate job or are you just your dad's helper?
Now, you say you don't want to rush into anything- Your are what- 27? You said You've been thinking about this since you were a crumb-cruncher, how much thinking do you want to do? You ought to be in a rush by now, don't you think?

You ought to be in a rush by now, don't you think? I have been deliberating for quite a few months, but I have never made it out like it was some big decision that I have been putting off for years. Yes, it has always been an option in my mind, but never as serious an option as it is now. I do not work for my dad period. He does not push me or try to keep me from wanting to be in this business. He understands that this is a lifestyle that I have to be willing to accept and I am the one that will know when it is my time. I do make several trips every now and then with him when I can for FUN....and usually when he has a more difficult load that is in the home area I help him out to make things easier on him. Is there anything wrong with that? You try to make out like I ride with him and expect to make a career out of it - hardly the case! If anything my dad will be my ticket in this business, but I do plan to drive for a large flatbed company just to get my training. After that I plan to get my own truck and lease on pulling flats and drop decks with my dad. If dad wasn't so busy and had a double bunk I would probably just train with him, but it turns out that it is a lil more practical if I do it with a major carrier. When I say training I mean my 1-2 yrs OTR experience. One last thing......if you want to try and bust someones balls, go elsewhere, cause I aint gonna respond to your non-sense anymore. I know you claimed no disrespect, but that is basically the intent of your response. Nuff said!

Dont know if I am afraid that I will hate it, or if I am afraid that I will like it?
but when I am ready I will take the plunge. I am taking my time so I dont have to be one of the ones that makes the jump and then realizes two weeks into it that it is not like I want it to be. If I do that, where will all the wasted time be?
and again.........
I do plan to drive for a large flatbed company just to get my training. After that I plan to get my own truck and lease on pulling flats and drop decks with my dad.

I was going to ask the same question vavega. hamboner...do you have a job now? If not, what do you plan to do if trucking isn't for you?

I love some of the attitudes and responses I get on this board. Vavega, I currently work in telecommunications. If I decide that im not cut out for trucking, I will either go back to work in telecommunications or put my degree to work. Guess I will start attacking everyone on here that asks questions too... seems to be the norm around here. Maybe then I will seem like a hardcore trucker that just got my cdl?

BTW Didn't see any attacks on you either, the guys just making a wrong assumption, that you have made up your mind, cause that would take you forever!
