I think 80 through PA is the big surprise for many. Those used to running serious mountains out West (Donner, Cabbage and such) seem to think running PA is like running flat ground. That will get a person in trouble. And those who run it constantly become cocky about it (witness the trash haulers.) That will get you in trouble too.

Best you can do is remember that it's your truck and you should run it your way, ignore the throttle jockeys and be safe.

If you feel the need for speed, and you are out on the open highway, then by all means, GO FOR IT!!!

If taking an 80,000# big truck around a hair pin curve at 75MPH turns you on, then stop at the nearest truck stop, park, set the brakes, go inside, and drop some quarters in the "SuperTrucker" video machine, and roll and wreck till your hearts content!!!

You won't block traffic, or ruin your DAC Report!!!

I can most likely do a thing too slow a thousand times, and come back and do it again. If I do it too fast just once, I may not be the only one that only gets one shot at it.

That holds true for everything except for JUMPING THE SNAKE RIVER CANYON...

Pete's still have a high center of gravity. They're "lower" then other trucks, but it's still very high.

Let's see:

-High center of gravity
-Live front axle
-Tires with big sidewall
-"steering box" front steering system, not rack + pinion
-Massive unsprung weight
-Long frame that tends to twist

The way I look at it, trucks have everything working against them regarding handling. Couple that with clumsy air drum brakes, you're not driving anywhere near a performance vehicle!

Well, i cross PA on I 80 or I 70/76 at least twice a week, for the last 10 years.
I know every curve, drop or pothole, and depending on my load, and conditions, i could roll up to 75mph, at the places you've mentioned, but I'd agree with the statements above;-Don't worry about what somebody else doing, keep your comfortable speed and distance. 8)

Especially in unfamiliar areas, in the hills!

carter, as the others have said, keep doing what your doing. I took a corner one morning right on the edge and it scared the living daylights out of me. I misread it and was going about 15 mph faster than what I should have been at. My chaser said my left side tires on the trailer were just barely touching the roadway as I went around the corner. I thought the corner was more banked than it was, instead it was an illusion, it was nearly dead flat. Now it doesn't matter, if I am unsure, I slowdown well in advance just in case the corner isn't what it appears to be.

I watched a guy come off and off ramp of the I 10 in Fontana today. He barely slowed as he came off, made a left turn and all four of the right side tandem wheels were off of the ground.

I was delivering to a restaurant in Mass. once and a LTL truck came in to deliver some equipment. When he was leaving he took a uturn to get out of the parking lot and onto the road. His inside trailer tandems were off the ground entirely. I swore he was going to tip over.

Speaking of I80in PA, just east of 380 is a long downhill, at the bottom there is a curve that many drivers dont expect to be a sharp as it is, ive sat in traffic after they've closed the highway because some cowboy decided to go landscaping in the median.

I was chasing a chip truck down a twisty little two-lane road in northern Alabama a few years ago. He was driving way too fast and I was holding close. At one point he rounded a right-hand curve and his right-side tandems left the pavement and the trailer started to tip. At the same moment a car was coming the opposite direction. Well, I held my breath, but he didn't tip over. I slowed down a bit after that and eventually lost site of him. Reminds me of some of the log trucks in north Louisiana running those little back roads at 70+mph. There's just no way I'm going to run like that unless I'm empty.
