What if it is not a pet, but a companion? What if we were married? 8)

Werner requires $500 for small to medium dogs and for cats, for large dogs (like great danes) they charge $1000. As their current pet policy is worded, a driver could get away with a mountain lion believe it or not, I knew of a place that sold 2 week old cubs for $1200. Cat rules are so vague... And before anybody flips out, no I didn't have a couger on my truck, but I did check into it just for grins because of werner's mistakes with wording. I got a good laugh out of it back when I worked for 'em. If you love your cat and drive for Werner, please don't take him or her OTR. Werner requires declawing, this is a horrible mutilation of a full third of the cat's digits. It can cause behavioral problems, and is very inhumane. Please research this in depth before considering declawing. A wonderful product exists that is a great alternative, it's called "Soft Paws". Straight up, don't get a dog if you need to debark it, and don't get a cat if you need to declaw it.

deBoer told me 1 dog was okay with no deposit.....they had "special" trucks for pets.
I guess that means one that's been used as/or smells like a portapot.
Declawing a cat is not good.My daughter has her's done and the cat allmost died from an infection. To bad it wasn't her sorry hubby.

Here's my post from another thread:

When I first started driving a year ago, I too wanted to take my dog with me. In fact, I almost declined working for TMC because of their no pet policy. I have since changed my mind. After doing a bit of research and experiencing life on the road, it IS cruel to take your dog along with you. I KNOW that most dogs will JUMP at the opportunity to go along for a ride. So too would a three year old human child jump at the chance to go running off a cliff if their parent did. They simply don't KNOW any better and only want to be close to their master. They don't necessarily LIKE the truck, they like the company of their human friend.
However there are three major problems I see with this now:
1- The inside of vehicles STINK to the sensitive nose of an animal. The vinyl and leather intiors of vehicles release nauseating fumes most humans learn to ignore. Not to mention the lack of stimulation and exercise afforded by being cooped up inside a truck.
2- Being an ANIMAL, and of free will. There WILL be one time when your pet will interfere with your ability to safely operate your vehicle or distract you (even if only for a split second) when it may cost you your life. Those of you who will respond, "I've had a dog in my rig for 20 years and NEVER had a problem." DO have a problem and don't even know it. You've only been LUCKY so far, NOT a skilled pet owner with a "miracle" pet.
3- A few shippers forbid pets on their premises even if they stay inside the truck for good reason. It's DANGEROUS.

Now befor the hate mail or flames start rolling in allow me to state that I already KNOW that there are those of you out there who STRONGLY disagree with my OPINION. But remember it is only that, MY OPINION. Leave your pet home where he/she can enjoy a life of freedom (hopefully) with room to run and be what they are, an animal.

I'm sorry, I can't figure that one out at all. A third? I thought 2 paws out of 4 was a half? 8)

I drove at Werner and we had our little girl in the truck. She only weighs about 20 pounds. We had to put down a $500 deposit, which was $50 a week deducted from our pay til we had $500. We got all of our money back. As long as you keep it clean you should have no problem getting your money back as long as it isn't a non-refundable deposit.

One thing I did, and was surprised that I did not get fired for it when I drove previously was that I just took them on the truck and did not say anything. Only problem that I ran into is I could not run into Canada because they where not authorized pets.

Not telling you to do the same, but there are a lot of drivers who have and still do that.

That is why I am getting my time as a company driver in, and then eventually I will go to owner operator.

There is a lot of liability that can come with allowing pets in a commercial vehicle. Besides, they can do considerable damage to equipment. Companies will find it difficult to get their money back from a driver who leaves after having a dog or cat that has destroyed the interior. I have had 2 drivers who had dogs in my truck without permission. The first was pretty clean, the last one left a lot of hair and odor in the truck. It isn't healthy to have a pet in such close quarters. There are companies who will allow pets, but personally, I think that if anyone wants or needs to have pets with them constantly, they should look for a different profession. I think the cons outweigh any benefits. Pets can be distracting and take additional time to see to their needs, which can be a problem when you are pushing a tight deadline. Some shippers will not allow pets. They need to be walked and I prefer having a clean place to walk, should the desire hit me. But then, there are some drivers who are probably not as clean as some pets.
