Newb Dog Policy Question
 

So I've seriously been considering getting my CDL and becoming a professional truck driver. However, there is only one variable that would prevent me from doing so.... my dog. I'm a single man and don't really have anyone to watch him while I'm gone and getting rid of him is not an option. I thought I should probably figure this out before I get too involved in the recruiting process.

Can anyone tell me what typical dog polices are regarding age, weight, breed, etc..? Or at least how to find that information out myself? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Polocies will differ by company, some say no, some require a deposit. Not sure about size restrictions but if you have an alaskan malamute you might want to look into a different career. :D

Company policies are all over the place when it comes to pets. They range from no pets at all to pets under 10-15 lbs to about any size dog or cat.

Many companies that do allow pets require a deposit, sometime refundable sometimes not, before the allow a pet. I have seen as high as $500 for this deposit.

The only way to get an actual answer to your question is to contact companies you are interested in and ask about their pet policy.

BTW: You will need to find something to do with your dog while you are in training, which depending on the route you go could be a total of 12 or more weeks.

A lot of the companies post their policy on their website too...if that is any help. And usually you do not get the deposit back. They use it for cleaning misc repair etc...

You will probably have to find somebody to take care of your dog during training, but after that, I'm sure that there are companies out there who will let you bring fido along,.....for a small deposit.

Thanks for all your replies, they have been very informative and encouraging. My pup is a 75lb, 8 month old lab right now so he's only gonna get bigger. I purchased him from a breeder who has had a lot of success getting their dogs certified as therapy dogs within 2 years. He's VERY laid back and calm. Right now the the highest weight limit I've found is 60lbs, so if anyone knows of a company that goes higher I would really appreciate the heads-up (I'll pay whatever deposit I have to).

CFI has a liberal pet policy that allows big dogs. I saw a CFI driver with a full grown Rottweiler on board. He was a huge dog, but very well mannered. The driver said CFI allows domestic dogs or cats, any size however they will hold you liable for any and all damages incurred by the dog.

no deposit here...... .01 per mile :roll:

I'm not 100% sure, but isn't 75 pounds a bit overweight for such a young Lab?
