Default Atlas question

What is everybody's preferred atlas? I know Rand Mcnally, motor carrier, but..just regular, deluxe, large?
My husband has a regular one currently due to cost, but he was quite taken with the deluxe. Is it something that comes in handy? Was thinking about getting him one for Christmas if it would actually be much better...

Deluxe or Large Scale. Does you husband wear bifocals. If so Large Scale or a magnifying glass is the only way to go.

I prefer Van Lines j/k

I used to Rand McNally Road atlas. Its cheap, and is a good "general" atlas, but I still 2nd guess it with mapquest.

If you buy one make sure it's the Glossed Pages one or they won't last long. More expensive but worth it.

Amen! The bindings of paper atlases I've seen are sub-par (at best). The laminated "glossy" pages can take a beating (and a spilling! )

Atlases are a lot like calenders.. what till after the new year and pick up a laminated atlas for about $20. Not that much is going to change in an atlas in a year.

I was with a friend who picked up one at that price from a Pilot, I kept telling him it was marked wrong. I paid $50.00 something from Amazon.com and thought I was doing well.

I always buy the laminated Rand McNally with metal spiral rings. I usually buy a new map about every 2-3 years. I also usually buy at the end of the year when the new ones come in. I paid $10/ for the one I now have that lists for $30. I liked it so much that I bought one for each truck. :P I really lucked up at that price. 8)

I found that the laminated ones don't come in large scale. I could be wrong. In Nov of 05, I was ABOUT to pay $20 (I think) for an '05 edition. Then I met a driver looking at the same ones who offered me his '04 large scale edition (slightly used but in good shape) for $10. At the pace of construction in this country, nothing changes in at LEAST 2 years, so I bought it!

The large scale has a "coated" page, but not plastic. You can't write on it and wipe it off.

But... whatever you do... don't pay $50 - $80 bucks for one just for a Christmas present! Pilot T/S's usually have the cheapest rate (with rebate) that I've seen.

Save all you can on the Atlas, and buy him a copy of "The Next Exit" to go with it ($16 at Flying J.)
