I lived in Missouri for 13 years. Invariably everyone I knew there that was from that neck of the woods was more interested in staying at home as much as possible with their families instead of working long hours and getting paid well. Hence, you probably find that in Arkansas as well. They seem to be very close in socio-economic levels and family ties [Arkansas & Missouri].
The area I lived in had an average income of $20,000/year [I-44 between St. Louis and Springfield-University town]. I can't imagine how anyone lives on that amount?!? I lived in 12 states and several places in each state; hence, I have a wealth of knowledge about every area of the country. [ My father was a fighter pilot in the U.S.A.F. and later an engineer with an Aerospace Company.]
It was always a mystery to me why someone wouldn't sacrifice family time to make a much healthier living. I think it's where you're brought up and your socio-economic background. That's all I could figure out.
I was willing to take a lower "titled" position with higher pay than a "managerial" position with low pay. Although, I come from an upper middle class background where work and money were the predominant factors for members in my family. I chose to move to the backwoods with my ex-husband for his career. All my family is now wealthy with the exception of me. I divorced my wealthy husband. Money isn't everything and it definitely doesn't make you happy. Although, I've chosen a profession that I love and work hard at but probably won't ever be wealthy like the rest of my family.
Now, I'm reaping the mistake of the move to Misery [oops did I say that out loud?!?] Missouri, years later-after the divorce and switching professions. Could make a hell of a lot more going back to being an Accountant [have two degrees], but I love to drive. Obviously, money isn't my main motivator. My motivation isn't to find a husband/boyfriend who earns a lot of money either. Haven't met many drivers with good incomes unless they've driven for years or are Owner Operators.
The decisions we make!!!
