Being in a hurry is how mistakes are often made.

I'm good about the glad hands, but I did forget the landing gear once during hooking. They make a terrible racket when you're draging them on the ground. My worst fear, of course, is unhooking and taking off with the landing gear still UP. I could see that getting ugly.

Other than that, I do things like forgetting to set or release my brakes.

I feel like an idiot sometimes, so it's nice to know other people do the same things.

I think the key is to find an order of doing things the same way, and to slow down and not be in a hurry so you don't skip over something important.

While we're on the subject of 5th wheels I found out when you are trying to pull your 5th wheel handle and it want budge release your parking brakes and leave you trailer brakes engaged, back up a little and then pull you parking brakes. Your handle will then release with no problem.

I've got a brother that was driving for some thirty years and one day, forgot to unhook the lines. Pulled the plug off the pigtail, and had to get a new one. While I have never done it, I understand it can happen to anyone at anytime. I would guess it will be a while before you do that again.

As others have said, it aint the first time and I promise you it won't be the last. You have just learned a valuable lesson though. I have gotten into the habit of double checking everything. I even get under the trailer and look at the fifth wheel to make sure the jaws are locked. If I hook it up today and wont actually pull it till tomorrow I'll check it all again the next day before I leave as part of a pre-trip.....Don

Default How about this one...

I used to drive chip truck, pulling 32 food doubles with con-gear. One day I left the yard, and my back trailer was full of refuse chips (hog fuel) an I was to drop it near a certain intersection and another driver was going to hook up to it and take it the rest of the way to the mill, since he had one 32 already loaded with the same type of fuel. So after about two hours of running, I get to the drop point, pull over, lower the landing gear on my back trailer, pull the fifth wheel latch and pull forward a few feet. Company policy was to not leave the con-gear under the trailer, so I was supposed to drop it right there in front of the loaded trailer with a pintle lock on it. Well, I ran back up to the cab cause my phone was ringing, and I got to talking. After logging up, I took off and drove the two hours to my dump point, went to back the trailer up and hey, that con-gear was still hooked to my trailer (OOPS). So instead of leaving it with the other trailer, I accidentally forgot to unhook it and towed it behind my trailer way the hell out of the way. Needless to say I got a bit of a "talking to" since they other driver had no con-gear to pick up the other trailer with. Oh well, lesson learned, didn't do that one again. I guess that's what happens sometimes drivng night shift chip truck. So I guess we all make dumb mistakes sometimes.

Where I work we pull doubles at night, we go out, swap trailers, then return. Four trailers, 4 hooks, 4 drops, and sometimes the mind ain't too sharp at 3-4:00 o'clock in the morning! I'm always worried I'm going to miss a step.

Default Stretching the Hydraulic lines

I have done the same thing when unhooking. I have hydraulic lines that are only attached when I am loading and unloading. I just finished closing up the trailer and getting ready to drop it. I pulled out with the hydraulic lines attached. I stopped before I ripped them out completely. Those lines are very expensive and make one hell of a mess if they rupture. I made a mess, but did not totally screw them up. Getting in a hurry is a bad idea - It ends up costing money.
