It's a cycle. Unions want more money, the price goes up. Prices go up and Unions want more money.

Unions had their place years ago and were instrumental in getting many laws passed to protect workers and provide a safe working environment. But now they are just about money and power, political power. IMHO they have outlived their usefulness and just become a corrupt political entity.

Some years ago, if you worked for one of the big three automakers (Ford, GM or Chrysler) you were expected to drive an American car. In fact, they wanted you to drive a car that was made where you worked. If you worked for Ford then you were expected to buy a Ford. The same with GM or Chrysler. I seem to remember that there were even signs that stated that parking was for American made cars only. If you pass one of their plants today you are as likely to see a Japanese or German brand as an American. Of course, many of those cars are made here and a lot of our cars are made abroad these days.
I can just about bet within 10-15 years Toyota or one of the other Japanese automakers will completely buy out GM. In fact Gman it was about two years ago that Toyota was making a serious push to buy them out. It may not be a question of if but when that GM will be owned by Toyota.

Good thing you said 10-15 years because Toyota is going to lose a whole lot more money with the wrongful deaths suits they are facing from the accelerator issue alone. They have an issue right now that is rather old but is new news. Some of their pickups had a problem with tie rod ends breaking and causing the driver to lose steering control. Documents show they knew of the problem more than 15 years ago and did very little about it. They did a minor recall but some drivers found out the hard way. Some lost their lives some walked away. One family has filed a lawsuit against Toyota and the US Govt. over it after their son was killed by this defect. Being how old of an issue it is and the documents involving this case, it shows a long pattern of Toyota covering up problems from the US Govt. and also doing very little to fix them. Some owners who found the problem before getting in a wreck took the trucks to Toyota dealers but Toyota refused to cover the defect under warranty, claimed it was normal wear and tear.

All these car makers seem to be in trouble. They took shortcuts and it blew up in their face. Once the lawyers get involved they can drain a company in short order.
