"That Old Tattered Flag"
#1
I suppose I'll be roasted for insincerity here, or something. But, I don't care. Someone said something on some thread about a "tattered old flag." Johnny Cash must have done it proud. I'm no songwriter, but that sparked one of the last embers of creativity I retain, and I came up with this.
If you change Tattered Old Flag... to Old Tattered Flag... you play right into one of my favorite songs.... The Old Rugged Cross. Once I saw that.... the words just flowed. I doubt anyone will like it, but this is just the rough draft. To the TUNE of "The Old Rugged Cross".... The Tattered Old Flag On a hill bought with blood stands an old tattered flag, the emblem of sacrifice made. And I love that old flag, that flies free over lands where our men, the last measure have paid. And I cherish that old tattered flag... whose broad stripes and bright stars ever wave. I will love her as long as I breathe And I promise her people to save. Though the nights be so dark And the days hell on Earth The cause is worth all the cost. I will charge when it's light and not faint from the fight My mission will never be lost. I will rescue that old tatterd flag from the onslaught of hatred and fear, I will carry her banner for'er... and lie peaceful as long as she's near. Now my days are all gone But, my unit moves on With a mission of freedom and life. Twas my duty to fight And my death is my right In a cause that will end the World's strife... So don't worry, I'm with you this day As you carry our flag into fire... That old tattered and ragged old flag that a nation of heroes inspire! (refrain) Yes, I'll cherish that old tattered flag, O'er whatever far hill she shall wave, And the World will forever be known As the land of the free and the Brave! (instrumental) Yes I'll cherish that old tattered flag... Whose broad stripes and bright stars ever wave I will carry her banner for'er... While she waves o'er the lands of the brave. [ In memorium of every American soldier ]
