KEEPING UP WITH THE JONSES:

OKLAHOMA CITY -- The U.S. Geological Survey has recorded another earthquake in central Oklahoma. A 3.2 magnitude earthquake was recorded at 7:42 a.m. Thursday about two miles southwest of Jones, out 10 miles northeast of Oklahoma City. No injuries are reported. There have now been 47 earthquakes and aftershocks recorded in Oklahoma this year with 40 of those measuring at least a 2.0 magnitude.

Quakes of magnitude 2.5 to 3 are generally the smallest felt by people.

Geological survey officials say the earthquakes are part of a phenomenon called a swarm and do not appear to present a serious threat.

Just this year? 47 earthquakes in Oklahoma? And, how many does Oklahoma have in any given previous year?

I'm not sure WW. I just started paying attention here recently when I started feeling these "tremors", and they are happening pretty much in the same place.

I have however heard before that these small tremors are happening all of the time all over the U.S. Maybe not as centralized as these have been, I don't know, just something I've heard over the years that I have kept stored waaaayyyyy back in the recesses of my mind.

Yeah we get small one's now and then here, the biggest 2 in my lifetime here have been 3.8 and a 4. The rest are 2's. There is a fault around I-64 between Richmond and C-ville that runs nearly parallel with 64. If you go on weather.com they have an earthquake map that is updated which shows all earthquakes each day in the US. Noticed Alaska and an area in Tennessee normally see the most each day.

That is interesting. I'm going to keep that site in mind.

I just don't remember hearing as much about major quakes until recent months. I'll have to check and see if there's a site that shows an earthquake map for the world. I used to hear about a number of small quakes from time to time, but with all the big ones recently, I don't hear anything about the little ones anymore.

There have been a couple of small quakes in FL, but they seem to be few and far in between.

Not all of these made the news. And, I don't believe if this includes all of them around the world. Doesn't list the one in Indonesia, and it doesn't list all the ones in CA that have been less than magnitude of 4.

I just had a look at the quake history for Jones, OK. Curious, isn't it?

1970 to 1975 - 3 quakes
1975 to 1980 - 1 quake
1980 to 1985 - 2 quakes
1985 to 1990 - 3 quakes
1990 to 1995 - 6 quakes
1995 to 2000 - 4 quakes
2000 to 2005 - 3 quakes
2005 to 2009 - 24 quakes

In all that time, I see only one with a magnitude of 4.7, and the majority of them are in the range of 3.something. But, unless they have not been very meticulous about recording them prior to 2005, they've certainly increased in the last two years. I did not find stats for 2010, but the majority of them, by far, happened in 09, with several in 08. And, now, 47 just in the first quarter of this year? That might suggest...

2010 - 188 quakes

Is it building up to something or is there some kind of volcano working it's way up?????

Get a bit more time on the computer (when my wife isn't on it) and I might like to look up some of the other areas that are experiencing quakes as well.

VERY interesting WW. I don't know which direction fualt lines run, North-South, East-West but I know their is suppose to be a REALLY big one over in Missouri. I wonder if we are part of that?

If you keep up all of this research we are going to have to put you in for a siesmologist degree! We'll have to start calling you DR. WindWalker.
