Truck Driving School Enrollment Soaring in Down Turned Economy
Updated: Aug 4, 2009 11:23 AM
![]() By Ty Brennan With the current state of the economy, many are looking for jobs after being laid off or looking to find a new career altogether. Some seem to think they've found an almost recession proof job behind the wheel of an 18-wheeler. We see them out on the highways everyday. Truck driving is one of the few industries that continues to flourish despite a floundering economy and because of that, the number of people looking to become a truck driver is growing. Lynn Jorgensen, Sage School Director: "Trucking is one of those industries where there's always a need for it." At Sage Truck Driving School in Blackfoot, their enrollment is up 25% from last year and they expect that number to grow as the year progresses. One of those looking to land a job is Mike Thompson, who lost his job six months ago. Mike Thompson, Student: "I got laid off... now I'm here." He's hoping when he graduates this Friday he'll be able to find a job that'll help support his wife and three kids. With a starting salary between $32,000 and $39,000 dollars that's been a big draw for most of these students. Lacey Panell, Student: "With the way the economy is right now, you've got to have a job that's secure and make money off of, and you always need truck drivers." Tuition for truck driving classes can range anywhere from $1,500 to $4,500 dollars depending on the schooling. Lynn Jorgensen says they're also seeing people with college educations and even masters degrees looking into the program. Here too:
http://www.cnycentral.com/news/news_...aspx?id=267646 Interesting comments. The global economy is down, there's less stuff to haul, trucking companies are on the ropes or gone altogether, but demand for truck drivers is up. Get it?

Far more realistic than the last one. But what he did not cover is how many of those graduates will actually find work.

One reason he may have taken the tact he has is that the driving school(s) could be advertisers on his station. Media tend to not scrutinize or question advertisers as much as those who are not clients.
