Default Fuel Theft

Fueled at the TA Ft. Bridger, Wy last night, then went to Little America for the evening. Woke up with 100 gallons of fuel less than when I went to sleep. APU was running, I didn't hear a thing.

Sheriff Deputy said fuel theft has been epidemic in that area.

Me, I feel kind of violated.

T/A's sell the fuel tank inserts pretty cheap. They simply slide down into the tank and lock themselves in place, and yes - they work. I've got up in the morning 2x this year to find my caps removed, but no fuel was missing because of them. My company put them into every one of our trucks.

I will be looking into those inserts.

I usually don't fuel and then lie down or leave my truck. I was hit a few months ago and lost an estimated 150 gallons. I also had my batteries and cables stolen off of the same truck. It had been sitting for a while. The last time I had fuel stolen was in Phoenix at the Flying J about 8 or 10 years ago. That time they got about 100 gallons or so. issedoff:

I have had a couple of people tell me that the latest trend is to punch a hole in the bottom of the tank when they find an insert in the tank.

I think I may hear that, if I was in the truck.

Yes, this incident opened my eyes a bit about defensive parking and the risk of fueling before sleeptime.

And, at -20, you wake up shivering from the cold and realize you have no fuel left. HANDY...

But, I would think that punching a hole would make enough noise to wake a driver up... Unless they used one of those nice, cordless drills. But, I don't know if I would want to get fuel into that.

YOU don't KNOW if YOU would want to GET fuel in YOUR drill?

That is incriminating. And downright wrong.

We have fuel inserts in all of our trucks, and they also have them in our reefer tanks. I'm sure the inserts have worked, but I hate them. The fuel splashes out, and you can't prob the pump handle against the lip. I have to stand by the truck, and hold the pump handle to keep it from falling out of the tank. They put those inserts in about a year ago.
