Mr Crowley is my most favorite guitar piece by Randy Rhoads. It needs to be mentioned that there is always a big difference between “live” and “studio” versions of songs.

Some people like one over the other. I like studio best, but there are occasional live versions that capture a special moment between the artist and the audience, or just a more musical moment in the artist…that cannot be recreated in a studio.

In Mr. Crowley, you hear Randy play the live piece with little sound effect to make it thick. Back when he recorded this, sound effects were very limited. We had the tremolo, reverb, wah-wah and fuzz (distortion) many of you recognize as Jimi Hendrix sound. We were just coming out with chorus, flange, delay and echo, and others.
In the studio, Randy played the solo 3 times and mixed them together to give that thick sound, which we called “natural chorus” back in the day. Man…you had to be a Randy Rhoads to even be able to attempt that. Not many guitarists were so good to be able to play a solo so perfectly, in tempo, and offering minor inflections, that could later be mixed as though it were one guitar. So if you hear the studio version of Mr. Crowley, you will have a little greater appreciation of how enormous that was to us guitarists.

Today we can play the song with a sound processor, that gives chorus, delay, thick tube and cabinet sound, to emulate a wall of 4x12 mic’d cabinets, etc. and even mimic an arena acoustic…and have an MP3 backing track behind it all. We’ve come a long way since the day of Randy Rhoads, and yet even still, not many guitarist with his ability.

Okay, that was something I just wanted to get out.
Here is a hott chick playing Mr. Crowley. She goes flat in some spots, looses tempo, but she gets props for her legs and hotness. Men are just naturally better at fingering.
Later I will post more of my favorite guitarists. I just stumbled upon this delicious treat just now.

…and one last thing…this reminds me…when are one of you guys and your wife gonna set me up with one of your hott single friends? Come on already! :P

p.s. while there...check out "funky girl" link on the right. Sweet.
