The world lost a great person today.

July 22, 2008 · Estelle Getty, the diminutive actress who spent 40 years struggling for success before landing a role of a lifetime in 1985 as the sarcastic octogenarian Sophia on TV's The Golden Girls, has died. She was 84.
Getty, who suffered from advanced dementia, died at about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday at her Hollywood Boulevard home, said her son, Carl Gettleman of Santa Monica. "She was loved throughout the world in six continents, and if they loved sitcoms in Antarctica she would have been loved on seven continents," her son said. "She was one of the most talented comedic actresses who ever lived." I will be spending the evening mourning the loss. :-(

Hate to agree with you, Rev.... but, I liked her, too! She had a long and prolific career, though she rarely knew Stardom UNTIL, that show! She should have found it sooner.
It is sad for us "boomer babies," that so MANY of the greats we grew up admiring are now "dropping like flies." I don't mean any disrespect..... but, they are ALL going fast! Soon, we will have nothing LEFT but the "class of our own generation," and although there are some greats in there..... it just isn't the same! (And too many "class acts" of our generation have already checked out!) T.V. and movies today, are NOTHING like they USED to be! I think all the really GOOD "writers" have gone on before! You don't have to "think" to get a joke today..... they'll explain it to you! Fear is not embedded in your mind, it's splattered on the screen! Intrigue is not analytical, but digital! And even the overload of "reality" T.V. is so far from reality as not to be recognized...... or even CARED about! Ooops, gotta GO now! "How I survived a Japanese Game Show" just came on! Can't MISS that!  Estelle Getty was a "soldier of the arts" plain and simple! I HOPE she gets a "lifetime achievement" award at the next Emmy's!

RIP, Estelle!!
We'll miss you. Golf, you are all too correct; I'm a Baby Boomer Boob Toober, and it's sad to watch the old Baby Boomer shows and realize how many of the people who made me laugh are now among the faithful and dearly departed.
