I want to learn how to make a website.

I want to learn how to make a website and I don't have a clue on where to start. I've done the basic google searches and I'm confused on what to do first and where to start first.
Can anyone recommend a book, website or any other informational material? I don't want to waste money on something thats useless. I figured I would ask here since I frequent this website the most and some of the poster also have technical backgrounds. Or if you have any experience with any websites, books and programs. Any information and direction is appreciated.

Best bet is probably going with any of the free hosting sites like Geocities or Angelfire. Most of those sites have the online ability to create a simple site. It's a good way to learn basic coding.
Taking it a step further, HTML coding is the basic web design language. Someone good with HTML can make a pretty spiffy website. Back before ASP and SQL and the like, I used to create websites by hard coding HTML. Made some good money from it, but as with anything technical, the industry will quickly outgrow anyone that doesn't fight hard to keep up with it. The best way to learn is to get a basic understanding of HTML and how it works. If you're using Internet Explorer, find some simple websites and then click your VIEW pull-down menu and view the SOURCE. That will show you the coding behind the web page. If you're fairly intuitive, you'll begin to see how it all fits together. That's how I learned. Good luck.

Thanks Twilight for the response.
I just bought the domain name through godaddy (I liked their Super Bowl commercials last year). The site is going to be for a future business so figured it would be best to pay for the hosting?

Barnes And Noble has a varity of books that can help you understand the basic:
Learn HTML in 24 hours(read it, used it, it works) HTML for Dummies is another good one. As for software, Micrsoft Front Page.

Just type in "What is HTML" on a search engine like ASK.com and you will get all the basic tutorials.
Like Twilight said. See how the "big boys" are doing it. You will make sense of it quickly. It's nice to have a person who might answer roadblock questions. In Ben's case, I think Fog might be the go-to guy for some pointers. He is a "code mechanic." You'll arm wrestle code when you get glitches, and question sanity itself. don't become a code monkey.

have fun, learning code is like learning a different foriegn language!!!! I have attempted Visual Basic and HTML. you must practice the language alot to make it become second nature. very hard and challenging for those with short attention spans, like myself.
good luck, it can be very rewarding

As a Code Monkey for the last 12 years, you will start with HTML.
Then depending on what webserver you will use to host you domain and web pages, (Linux or MS), Linux being the most popular and secure, there will be other programs you will need to learn. PHP ASP <---- (Microsoft servers) CSS Javascript Then what database software to use Mysql SQL Msql etc....... I left off a lot more, but these are the most popular. Then after you think you have it down, a new version will come out making you learn all the new changes. Then when you think you have a webpage, will it work in about 30 different versions of web browsers?? IE 5 will be different than IE7, Firefox, netscape, AOL, etc. If your up to a challenge, have a lot of time to sit at your computer, not married, or have a very understanding spouse go for it. |
