Default Dentist Hunting!!!!

Sounds Fun!!!!!

Anyways, I'm almost in desperate need to find a dentist in my area. I've been pushing it in the back for over 3 years. I tried the 21st Century approach by using the internet but i can't trust it. There are SO, SO many of them on the web and the phonebook. Who do you choose a good one?? I don't trust any dentist!! I think they are professional, educated scammers and if they really cared they could've found a cure for cavities!!!

Anyways, what do you suggest for finding a dentist?? im tired of using 800mg tylenol to kill the pain i have occasionally....

thanks for the help

Nick

p.s. should i call my lifelong primary care M.D. (whom i also don't trust) and get a reference??

ask friends and family or barring that total strangers. they'll be honest with you and they've sat in the chair. eventually one name will keep popping up. good luck!

I put off going to the dentist for 5 years and now I'm halfway through my $4000 dollar procedures... A couple crowns, root canals and I had my wisdom teeth pulled... I HATE the dentist, but the fact that this place uses conscious sedation and hands you a bottle of Valium and some other pill that makes you not care about anything... Now I like going to the dentist, It's a legal "high" feeling...lol. Although you can't drive for 24hrs...

what is conscious sedation?? i really want to try it!!

my only concern is waking up and feeling/hearing what they are doing. i once had a tooth pulled where they used nothing to ease the pain... that was when i was about 8 tho... it hurt BAD!!!!!!!!

If you end up looking through the phone book, look for a dentist that advertises as a "Gentle Dentist."

My dentist stories are horrible. I had one cavity as a child (and none as an adult). I had that cavity filled when I was in high school - drilled and filled with NO novacaine. I was literally screaming in agony. Said "F*** this, I ain't ever going again."

From that point on, I took very good care of my teeth. Brushing two or three times a day, flossing, everything. I didn't go back to the dentist for 9 years and when I did finally go back, it was for a routine cleaning. Cleaning mind you...yet, I got the whole works: cleaning, x-rays, mouth mold, etc. The "dentist" informed me that I had 4 baby teeth remaining (genetic, runs in my family) and he would have to pull them, then I would have to have surgery, have my jaw broken, and then put in braces for several years. I told him he was full of ****, I had come in for a damn cleaning, nothing more! Left there and vowed never to go back.

Got right back into my routine and another 7 years passed. Finally, my filling fell out of that one tooth. It was one of those 4 baby teeth I had. I ended up having to pick a dentist out of the phone book. I found a "gentle dentist", made the appointment, and off I went. Before he started, I told him my story. He assured me he was a gentle dentist and that he would take care of me. He pulled that baby tooth under the gas. Went back 2 weeks later for a cleaning and he, knowing I was still terrified of dentists, gave me the gas on the house, just for the cleaning.

I've been back every six months for cleanings, never need the gas anymore, and absolutely love my dentist. Weird or not, I actually look forward to the appointments now.

That's how much a GOOD dentist is worth.

I believe conscious sedation is Nitrous Oxide. They put a little clown nose on you and you breath in the nitrous. You're still awake and aware, but higher than a kite and quite frankly, you don't care about anything. When I got it to get my tooth pulled, I actually felt a lot of what was happening. But I kept telling him, "I don't even care!" After they take you off the Nitrous, five minutes later, you're back to normal. Pretty cool stuff.

Nitrous rules.

My worst dentist experience was from when I was young - maybe 6 or 7. Anyway, I had a cavity in one of my front top teeth that needed filling. He proceeds to climb on the chair on top of me (straddling me). When he gave me that shot in the roof of the mouth it was the MOST excruciating pain I've ever had - and I'm 39 now. Of course, with someone causing that much pain it was just natural for me to fight back. I kicked him square, and hard, in his - umm - family jewels.

After he finished vomiting he told my father to take me to another dentist as he couldn't treat me anymore.

Gentle Dentist; That is definitely a contradiction of terms.
