Hey Popeye,
We all had our "horrors" when we were first learning to drive. I wanted to go mountain driving desperately. The other two guys I was in training with could shift but would jam on the brakes and give all of us whiplash.
They got to go mountain driving and the instructor made me stay inside Denver to get more shifting practice. I hated to shift and was horrible at it. It does come to you. I missed the mountain driving part though. Living in Denver, I definitely should have been able to be instructed in the mountains though.
I love mountain driving and would stay out west if I could get the freight. Hate the four wheeler traffic in the east but have no choice since I can't make a living with my current employer driving the 11 Western.
Shucks, I might miss the opportunity to chain in the winter if they keep me east of Colorado. I'd certainly hate that! I suspect when winter comes I'll be back on 11 Western. Now I've gotten the opportunity to swelter in the South East in the summer, I'll probably be chaining in the winter out west. I guess that's trucking for you.
Good luck. I still would hate being a local driver and backing all day long with tons of lights. in the city. I'm definitely better at driving than backing. I've driven 3 years and still dread going to shippers and receivers worrying about "tight spots". I'm good at backing also-so it's just a quirk of mine. 8)
