With the torrents, there's a number of things to consider:
How many people are uploading (seeding) vs downloading (leeching) the file?
What is your connection speed?
I've downloaded collections of movies, tv episodes, etc that literally took weeks to finish. That's what's nice about having my system at home running 24/7.
As far as the file not being able to play, what type of file is it? AVI (Xvid, divx), mpg, etc. Is it a rar file? If so you need to decompress the rar file(s). You also need to have the proper codecs installed before they'll play.
If the files are avi and won't play, here's a great codec package (free):
