Sometimes that extra 20 miles will mean the difference between having a place to park the next night or not.

Take a run when I have a 1300 mile trip. I need to make at least 600 miles the first day if possible within my 14 hour limit so that I can make the remaining 700 within one more driving cycle (given the proper load/terrain/conditions of course) and park at the Consignee. If I had stopped at 580 miles I would have 720 remaining which is too many for 11 driving hours, so I would have to park at least 5 miles short of my consignee, and that is just foolish.

Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

The only OTHER reason I can come up with is, they're one of the "Wusses" on here who constantly complain about trucks idling in a truckstop! Shocked

Ha! Probably the SAME idiots who complain about not getting enough miles, hometime, etc. Sounds like poor trip planning to ME! Laughing
Unfair.
I park at weigh stations whenever I can and need to.
Some drivers run their RPM up to 1200 and let the fan cycle on and off, and if being irritated by that makes me a "wuss" then sign me up. As for constantly complaining though, I'm afraid I can't help you there. Because I just find a quieter spot.
Like a weigh station.

Okay, okay.... it was a bit unfair! I was just pokin' a little FUN at some folks and, maybe I got carried a way a bit! ops:

Sorry, folks, I didn't really MEAN it!

But, I DO wonder why people get into trucking if they don't like to be around idling trucks. Seems that's been the "way of things" for hundreds of years! [yeah, I know I'm exaggerating a bit!]

It's like how I wouldn't want to be a doctor if I couldn't stand the sight of blood!

WHY anyone would want to park there, when they could have stopped a mere 20 miles sooner at the pilot with fast food, showers, and other businesses, I'll NEVER understand! I guess they just LOVE D.O.T. officers knocking on their door in the morning!?

I guess SOME drivers think their logbook/clock rules their lives! Personally, I'd stop wherever I wanted to (within a reasonable radius of that scale,) where there was something to do, and softer toilet paper, and CALL it what I want it to be!

I like a good STEAK when I shut down at night, and maybe even a beer or two! I don't see that being offered at a weigh station! Some only have "porta-johns."

I KNOW it isn't true, but when I see a few trucks shut down at a weigh station, I can't help but assume they have been put "out of service" for trying to run too far!

You call that a little unfair? We park at weigh stations quite often. In GA, FLA, KY super coops, and the Greenwich, CT scale. There's always room, you don't have to worry about someone taking your hood off or backing into you, and you can take the dog for a walk without (in my case) having some dumb ass flash his lights at you to see if you're commercial.

I've had TWICE ever that they've knocked on my door. Both times it was because they needed us to move to a different area of the parking lot so they could either do their vehicle inspections on OTHER vehicles or do a school bus driver training course. We tend to be gone in the morning anyways.

Some have "driver convenience" centers. I don't think they have showers in them but they have clean rest rooms.

No offense, but a steak dinner at the truck stop just isn't that appealing to me. I'd rather put my own steak on the grill. Or go to a real restaurant somewhere else. We know of places all over the country where we can park and go to Chilis, Fridays, Cracker Barell, whatever. The flat iron steak at the Flying J just doesn't cut it. But if that's where you set your sights, power to you.

I did think your assumptions were a little strange.

Sometimes you can check on www.coopsareopen.com they don't always have that information though.

Temple, GA, weigh station

Also- if you DO get kicked out by DOT or hassled, you can leave a comment to let others know if they're thinking about parking somewhere.

Yeah- I use it a lot. Sometimes it's nice to know where you can and can't park. I've headed to a rest area before only to find out that it was AFTER the scale, not BEFORE it. That map isn't perfect!

Sometimes I wuss out and pull forward into a parking place. It's much quieter and the tail end of the trailers.
