I had two separate incidents like that.

The first one was in an Indiana Toll Road service plaza. I was so tired that when I parked the truck behind another rig, I fell asleep right there at the wheel. Since the engine was idling I guess I started dreaming I was driving. I guess I started dreaming that I was still driving and had dozed off at the wheel. I then woke up and saw taillights from the trailer I was parked behind. I slammed on the brakes. Did this a second time before I finally got up and went into the sleeper.

The second incident occured I was napping behind the wheel while being unloaded. The engine was off but I still ended up dreaming I was driving. I woke up to see myself heading for the curb across the street from where I was docked. I slammed on the brakes. I guess this caught the attention of the guy unloading me because he poked his head from the gap between the trailer and the dock and screamed "I AIN'T DONE YET!!!".

 

A guy I work with shared this story with me so I will share it with you. Back in the early 70's he and another driver were with the same company and at the same place to get unloaded. The second driver wasn't going to be unloaded till later in the afternoon so my coworker says I am going to this truckstop and I will take a nap and when you get there wake me up and we will run home together. My coworker gets to this truckstop and just lays his head down over the wheel (their company trucks were the old Int 4070 cabovers). He is awoken to the sound of an airhorn blaring, picks his head up and is windshield to windshield with another cabover. He is sure he fell asleep at the wheel and is about to have a head-on. He jambs on the brakes and sh#!s his pants. When he finally comes to his senses he realizes it is the other driver playing a joke. He stated that he must have lost 10 years of his life that night, not to mention a pair of underwear.
