Default Using recaps on steer tires

What are the regulations regarding the use of retreads on steering axles?

This is an issue that confuses many people. A misconception exists that retreads are not allowed on the steering axle of any vehicle. The fact is, retreads can be used on the steering axle on any vehicle with the exception of a bus. Paragraph "d" of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulation Title 49 Part 393.75 states, "No bus shall be operated with regrooved, recapped or retreaded tires on the front wheels."

With that said nobody recommends them for line haul use.

For more information are recaps check out this link.

Does anybody want to show me where it seys you can not run recaps on steers on semis?

Regardless of regulatory concerns, I am absolutely, irrevocably, and incontrovertably opposed to running recapped steering tires.

I would ABSOLUTELY and STEADFASTLY REFUSE to drive any truck that had them!!!

Why should a driver expose himself/herself to elevated riske just because an employer wants to save a few bucks!!!

Sorry, my life is worth more than that!!

While if given the choice I would not run caps unless the cases were mine and recapped at a place of my choosing, there is no evidence that recaps are any less safe or prone to failure than virgin rubber in the same situations. They are illegal on buses but not on trucks and it should be up to the owner of the vehicle.

It may be up to the owner, but it's also up to me to decide whether or not I want to incurr that risk. As far as there being "no evidence", I'll plead ignorance on that one; have not researched it, but I will say that I've driven many miles on re-caps, and had some failures. (BTW, I was very meticulous about checking tire pressure and inspecting my tires; I considered them to be part of what supplied my meal ticket!! Never drove on anything but virgin steers, and never had any problems with them.

I can understand on buses. On the 45' buses, that front axle will be loaded down at nearly 16,000 lbs when the bus is loaded.

Recaps on the steers is like wiping before you poo

If you jump over the nickle to pick up the dime, you'll find out the dime was a penny all along

I agree with Useless.

There is a difference between regroving and retreading. Retreading they put another layer of rubber on. Regroving they just cut the treads deeper. Don't think any anybody regroves tires any more. I never even seen a regroved tire.
