Driving home was running smoothly, apart from a minor panic attack on the approach to Torino; You see, Italian motor ways were constructed in the 1930,s and were mostly dual lane carriageways. Now they,re mostly 3 lane Autostradas and the old hard shoulder is now a lane of traffic. Ordinarily not a problem... But Torino is different.
Approaching the city, you notice that every bridge has diagonal supports which are marked up, the reason being, they,re too low for trucks to fit under. So as you,re driving along in lane 1, you have to be on the lookout for the next bridge; Take a little of lane 2 then return. You may at this point, think I,m winding you all up, but I assure you its perfectly true. There are countless bridges bearing the scars of unsuspecting drivers. Oh how I love Italy.... the place is a law unto itself, the people so laid back and friendly, the scenery sublime and with food to die for, its easy to see why the church never left Rome. Its also a place where, as a professional driver, you must be on your mettle. I,ve driven alongside guys who have lost concentration and suffered big time. One guy went into the side of a badly parked Italian in the fog and another sent a mercedes car flying through the air into a dyke. But those stories are for another time. Moving on, I passed Torino and Susa and started to climb the mountains back towards France. You need some patience in this leg of the journey as there are countless tunnels to pass through and overtaking in them is forbidden to trucks. With my relatively light load, this was doing my head in as I knew I could have flew up there; Other drivers behind me were lining up to take the slower heavy boys coming out of the tunnels too. Oh Lord... It was like wacky races once we cleared those infernal tubes Blasting air horns at one another and some guy arguing with another as he passed cos he had kept him down to 60 kph...What a laugh.. Through the Frejus and into France. The descent on the French side is very bloody steep in places and I took my time going down there for the first time, I can tell you. I drove on until I was shattered and headed into a service area. I,ll give the old Froggies their due, in France, the trucker is king. There are numerous service areas on the motorway, most of which have clean showers ample parking and shopping malls. Parking is also free, which is a big hit with British drivers as our own service areas want your eyes and the sockets too, for one nights parking in a piss drenched quarry-cum-building site which is a bus ride away from the amenities. And on French national roads, you have the "Center routiers", a series of truck stops about 20/25 km apart. Parking is free in these and they vary in size from a capability to house a dozen trucks to a couple of hundred. Well done Francais, you cater for the driver....But, you can,t cook for monkey nuts! Sorry bout that, I have to have a little dig at the frogs, I,m English....It,s my birthright...hee hee hee. Well, tomorrow I would be back in England, thank God; But, not before my run in with the Douanes... Or French customs. T.B.C
