If you are planning to get WIFI from any of the major truckstops, be aware that your service may vary. Depending upon how many trucks are in the lot, where you are parked, and how many people are logged on, you could either have a lightning fast connection, or you won't be able to log on at all.

Not to mention that you will only be able to go online if you are at that truckstop chain - if you get Flying J's service, and are at a Pilot, you are out of luck. That is why I recommend an air card. I am sitting in an industrial park right now, with a broadband connection - something the truckstop chains don't even offer. My current connection speed is 459.5 kbps. The average connection speed I had when I used truckstop WIFI is about 19 KBPS (if I was lucky).

Nextel doesn't offer wifi for the computer. Most computers are wired from the factory for wifi. Some rest areas have free wifi access. I believe you are talking about an air card. I check with them at one time and was told they didn't offer the air cards and had no plans to add them since Sprint has them and they are now one company. I use a Sprint air card. For the most part, it has worked fairly well. There are other companies who also have the air cards. All cost about the same per month. T-Mobile is a little less, but they may not have the coverage as Sprint, Verizon or Cingular. With sales tax I pay about $64/month for unlimited use. I run my authority and need to have Internet access from anywhere, so that is the main reason I have the air card. If your husband is a company driver and finances are tight, then you may want to try the Wifi. As was mentioned earlier, the down side is that you will be limited to the truck stop chain parking lot where you subscribe. Each of the major chains have their own Wifi. TA, Pilot and Flying J all have different Wifi connections and are not interchangeable. If he wants to be able to get on line anywhere, then the air card is the only way to go. One other thing, most of these air card companies have two programs for air time. Go for the unlimited usage. As soon as you log on, you are using bytes if you have the limited usage program. I tried that once and receive an air card bill for more than $1,400.

Verizon - I am on their $49.99 plan, and I am using the air card they provided - not sure of the manufacturer on it.
