Do most truckstops have wi-fi for laptops?

 

Yes, but it's not free. $7 a day average.

 

Flying J works pretty well and the yearly charge is about $200. Much cheaper than $7 per day. TA can be used with your Road King card for less than $2 per hr if you just want to check out something

 

Most trucker that go online a lot just buy the wireless aircard and pay for the unlimited plan... okay, maybe not most- but most of the ones I know who go online do it that way.

I have sprint. The unlimited plan comes to about $60/month with taxes and fees etc...

I think it's worth it- but I do a lot online. I figure that's about $2 per day- and since it's a tax write off and I can check fuel prices and neato sites like this one, I think it's justified for ME. I find a lot of information online, too, which I wouldn't be able to do if I didn't have it mobil in the truck with me (we don't often park at truck stops).

I have the Sprint Merlin S620 and am having problems with it.

This problem seem to be an incompatibility between the motherboard/chipsets with an AMD 64 Turion cpu & the air card. I've called both HP & Sprint tech support about the issue, and they know it exists.

Basically, when connected, the card will cause windows to 'blue screen' at random times. If you know what the blue screen is, you know it isn't good...

So, now I'm in the process of hitting every truckstop looking for one of the other model cards to exchange this one.

The problem doesn't exist if you use an Intel cpu.

 

I too use Sprint Mobile broadband (I'm on it right now.)

I never have been anywhere where I didn't have signal and at least dial-up speed. Enough speed to check e-mail and do light surfing, that is.

I have a company cell phone that is basically unlimited, so I figure for a bit more than the cost of my own cell phone I have internet access anywhere. Good deal.

I know there are some people who use the WiFi but I could never figure it out- and it made me mad to be paying for it when I'd get kicked off so much? How is it that all these places- Starbucks, airports, etc- can have reliable WiFi service, but not truckstops?

I use an air card- also Sprint. I didn't understand any of the techno-speak that Malakai 86 was talking about- I'm just glad I don't have that problem... whatever it is!

 

The truckstops have a bandwidth cap, something in the area of 10 megabytes per purchase if you buy wi-fi at the day rate. It's quite annoying.

I'm using the Cingular Aircard service, and I'm not all that happy with it; they are the only service that has a firewall on their side. Also, they totally screwed up my billing, sent me a $5000 bill the first month because they put me down at 5MB/month instead of unlimited! :evil:

 

I hated using my credit card for wi fi I never trusted the security of it.
one time I spent most of my minutes trying to get to sites.

I use verizon 60 per month also.

I picked verizon because when I was trying to find who had the best service, I ran into quite a bit of comparisson info from a RV website. I figured if the RV ers liked verizon it must have good coverage.
