Default Sprint EVO 4G

I just ordered my EVO this morning. I had to call customer service to actually find one. It'll be sitting at home waiting for me when I arrive in a couple of weeks.

I found a really cool mount for it for the truck: EVO Mount

It's a tilt & swivel mount, plus has the power connector permanently mounted. When you slide the phone in, it's automatically hooked to the power. The price on it is $79.99.

I also found this one, which is the same except that it uses a cigarette lighter charger: EVO Mount - Cig Lighter The price on that one is $59.99. This is the one I'm ordering since it's a company truck and I can't hook up the direct-connect power.

I also found CarDock v2, which allows for a custom landscape "driving" home screen: CarDock v2

Finally got home to get my EVO. LOVE it!!!

The mount that I mentioned above (with the cig lighter) is really nice. It's not completely automatic like the one that Sprint sells, meaning it doesn't automatically go into the 'Car' mode when you slide it in the mount. But, it's ultra-easy to insert the phone into it and have it on charge while driving. If I could've mounted it about 1" higher on the dash, I'd be able to take photos out of the windshield without taking the phone out of the mount. Right now it sees dash in about 25-33% of the image. Also - with this mount, you CAN NOT have any type of phone case on it, such as the silicone gel ones. Screen protector sheets are fine, but nothing on the phone case itself.

The built in navigation is nice, especially the Google Navigation, mainly because of the 'Speak your destination' feature. I gave it different addresses I've delivered to all over the country, and it's found every one of them. I can also tell it something like 'Pilot Travel Center Laredo Texas', and it finds it perfectly. I also have CoPilot 8 for the Android (it's not the truck-specific version). I'll try that out more in the coming weeks. It does have an RV mode which I tried out and it routed me around a low-clearance bridge in my area that the car mode wanted to route me across.

For the monthly cost, here's the breakdown:
1500 shared minutes (my wife's phone), unlimited Text and Data (truly unlimited)
Nights (7pm-7am) are free, calls to other mobile phones are free as well (any network)
$129/month for the base plan
$10/month for the 4G addon (it's a requirement with this phone)
$29/month for the Mobile WiFi Hotspot (for up to 8 devices)

The ONLY thing I've seen so far that's a drawback is the battery life. It's pretty bad. Also, when using the phone, it gets pretty damn warm, almost uncomfortable to have against your face. Luckily I use a bluetooth headset. I'll have to see how it does when disconnected from the charger when I'm parked and having the laptop using the WiFi. As long as it'll last through the night, I'm good.

Forgot to mention: I found a hard-sided belt clip holster for the EVO as well. It's designed so that the screen is against the flat part against your side, protecting the screen. The price on it is $29.99.

Also, here's pics of the 2 dash-mounts I posted above (the left one is the hard-wired mount):

I had this phone for 2 months. Had a wireless 4g card with Sprint before it also. Canceled because one month they claimed I downloaded 12gb in the 1st week of my cycle, which is crazy, so I went back to Verizon and got a Droid X(practically same as evo with a few more buttons). Hopefully LTE is coming soon.

Anyway, the 4g is nice if you can get in the right spot in certain cities. You can also tether away since Sprint doesn't seem to care for the time being. I never bothered with the gps functions since I'm happy with my garmin.

It is a very nice phone. Only downside is the battery life is aweful. You have to turn off gps and wireless, and use a task killer to get it to last most of the day.

I have the Evo 4G as well. Love it. rooted it, put a cusrtom firmware on it (free wifi hotspot tethering) 450 landline minutes, unlimited mobile to any mobile, unlimited data/everything for under $80. lol Can't go wrong... I use it regularly to play MMO's in the truck on my gaming laptop when i'm not home...

I'm not brave enough to root my phone. Do you gain anything other than the ability to use the WiFi hotspot for free?

I highly costumized my phone. doesn't have all the crap bloatware sprint puts on there, has the original HTC software that was intended to be on there, with a few mods for battery life, performance etc. xda-developers is the best place to hit up for all the how-tos, not as difficult as you'd expext. I do it with everything I own. My laptop/tv etc. whatever is hackable gets hacked. lol My way of rebellion I guess.
