question about my diesel engine and gas
I am driving cross country in my 1988 school bus. It has a 8.2l detroit engine. Someone told me i could run the bus on reefer fuel as it is cheaper. Can someone with knowledge of the road and engines contact me with the answer. Thanks.
Mike

I ain't gonna send you an email. How about I post my reply here.
If there is a separate pump for reefer fuel, it's probably what we call Off-road or construction and farm fuel, and it is dyed red. (#2 LSD)
Some stations even offer Kerosene, which is often used in heaters up North.
We distinguish reefer fuel from road fuel for tax purposes. The fuel is the same, but if used in your reefer it's not given the road tax. (and it's limited to 50 gals)
When we go to pump fuel, we have to push a button showing we intend to pump both truck and reefer fuel. This keeps our receipt separated.
If you are caught running the red dye fuel on the road, you can get a big fine.
I've never had anyone check my fuel tanks, but I think if you were to get caught, it might be when you pump, some damn Nazi see's you and reports you.

So if i did get the fuel, i could only get 50 gallons at a time?
Would mixing the 2 fuels mess with my engine?
I am trying to save every penny possible for the 3100 mile trip.
also i max out at 53 mph, i am going via florida to st louis then west, will i get a ticket fior going to slow?

your good to go. The fuel will not hurt anything. And you wont get a ticket for going to sslow.

At a commercial fuel station, our road and reefer fuel comes from the same pump. We have to push a button to designate reefer fuel from road fuel.
It's for tax purposes. When you push the button on the pump for reefer fuel only, the pump will shut off after 50 gals.
What you could do is push the button for both truck and reefer fuel...and at least get 50 gals cheaper. Leave yourself room for topping off with the 50 gals you are allowed on reefer.
There are stations that have a separate pump that offers "off road fuel."
As far as the "off road" pump (red dye fuel)... will it bother your motor?... nawah.
Here is a link to state speed limits. >> Speed limits in the United States
Most of the minimum speeds on interstate roads are 40-45, but there are a few roads that require a minimum of 50mph, so you will be okay. I would keep to the interstate roads as much as you can, as there will be less starting and stopping, and easier on your brakes. If you go on secondary roads, just don't let too much traffic back up behind you for very long. You risk getting an "impeding traffic" ticket....and there goes all the money you might have saved on fuel. :tears:
Come to think of it... saving a few shekels on fuel is a good plan... avoiding the Bears is more important.

The only difference between the 2, is that the non-tax, or farm diesel is dyed. It's red, and the road diesel is clear.
You could run the red diesel in your bus, but if you get caught, you won't be driving that bus anytime soon. If you can find someone to sell you "clear" farm diesel, then get after it. If they dip your tank, and it's pink, you are tattooed.
