Default Blow By

Hi Everybody, I have noticed a little smoke coming out my crank case tube I don't remember seeing it before now last few weeks. I guess I have a little bit of blown by. Is there any additive I can add that will help or am I domed to have a overhaul? The motor is a Volvo VED12 it has 835,000 miles on it. It still runs good and is still getting good fuel mileage and still good power. What should I do? All help appreciated.

A little blow by does not mean an immd overhaul. my truck has blow by for 4 years now. I use 2 gallons of lucas oil treatment at every oil change. it reduces the black smoke comming out the stack by 80 %. I get great fuel mileage & still have good power, so I am not worried. though I have well over a mil miles, with no over haul on engine ever. sooooo. just keep truck'in..

First you have to determine what is causing blowby.

If you are getting fuel into oil then it will thin it out and cause it to smoke out the breather..check your oil level and viscosity..send in a sample if you cant tell.

also, an air compressor can cause the blowby and of course it may be your ring

putting and addative is not the best thing to do if you have a broken ring. If you continue to drive and its a broke ring you can really damage the engine, however the rings could have lined yp allowing pressure into the crankcase.

also check if it has a blowby valve that is bad.

If anything..run a blowby test as this can answer a lot quickly...

but dont chance a motor on an additive.. big difference between a top end rebulid than a new or reman engine

This is all very true. as in my case though, I just have a high mileage engine. my rings are worn. I do burn/ leak 3 gal, oil between oil changes. but that is cheaper than an overhaul. I do need one & will get one ,should I keep truck. just not right now. I have no rings broke, no fuel on oil, or oil in fuel. e.t.c. I know my truck. additives do not fix anything. but some do help it limp along a while longer. just my opinion. I am no mechanic, but I would think a broke ring would give an indication more than just blow by. all of our 1970's chevy's ford's & other cars almost all had blow by, but still ran well, just had to keep the oil checked. almost every truck I see out here that is a few years old, has blow by. walk by all the trucks lined up at the truck stops, most are smoking out the blow by tube. it could be a problem, or just normal wear & tear.

Default blowby

Oh, blowby is an ablsolute necessecity for an engine..it would blow up without it.
The higher horsepower the motor the higher amount of blowby.

The only addative I can recommend it cetane put into the fuel..just straight cetane..it will help burn your fuel better an decrease soot build up and hopefully stop the oil ring from completely seizing to the piston.

As long as you can pull out your dipstick and you dont get oil splatter you can live with adding oil it will probably be alright.

anyways..yes every single truck has blowby no matter what... I also see too many people panic when they see it..even when its 100% fine !
