Nope, you can take it apart. It's under a vacuum so it will only suck a little air and that's it. Make sure your environment is clean. If your going to take it apart and leave it, put plastic bags over any open places.

Put all the parts on then bring it to Monroe muffler or some place like that. They have the equipment to purge the system and refill at a much cheaper price. ANY small garage can refill your system.

You CANNOT do this on your own with bottles of 134 from Walmart. The system needs to have a vacuum put on it.

To replace the A/C compressor just make sure you release the pressure from the low side, should be a plastic cap on there, underneath should be a schrader type valve. Just push it in until all the pressure is released. R&R the compressor making sure all the O-rings are still good, replace as needed. You don't have to vaccuum your system out. Just buy some cans of R-134 make sure you put the recommended amount of PAG oil in your system. Hook the recharge hose to the low side and turn engine on, turn A/C on Max and charge till system is full.

I replaced my A/C condenser myself earlier this year and didn't have to vacuum system out. I put about 4 cans of R-134 in and A/C works great.

Make sure you match the freon with what your system uses. If your system uses R-12 not R134 than the freon is going to be a little pricey.

well i plan on buying the parts myself, i know about compressor, anyone know abouts the price of a receiver drier?? i take it it cant be that much, well when i get home im gonna have a guy who does this stuff come over and watch me do it so i wont screw anything up, i thank you guys for your help, this info on here that you guys give me made it seem that when i was talking about my problem on the phone w/fr8liner and the petro that i knew what i was talking about :lol: :lol: :lol: but im learning though!!!!!!

Dryers are around 90-95.00. Hope the a/c is fixed by now.

You dont need A/C back in my day when i drove 1954 b-model macks we didnt have a/c and they where gas powered. I guess they just dont make drivers like they used to.<------ My dad tells me storys like that all the time that would be something he would say.

On the other hand am glad you got the A/C workin You dont know how good it is intill you dont have it.

I was talking to an a/c guy once. He says that the refrigerant should never leak out. If it is low, it's low for a reason. You can fill it up, but it will just leak out again until it is fixed properly. I find the compressors only last about 3 years anyways.
