acceptable viscosity grades for your particular engine should be listed in your engine owner's manual

Yes, and actually 5w40 synthetics foot the bill better than dino oils. I don't see too many dino oils other than 15w40.

This is according to the chart supplied by Volvo for the D12 engine.

that's because no one requests anything other than 15w40. most that i have checked in the past also approve a 10w30 c-rated oil for cold ambient temps

So basically as long as I meet the API rating(obviously I will) and follow the viscosity guidelines, I shouldn't have a problem?

Do you know anyone that has run rotella T synthetic?

I'm actually going to try out PetroCanada Duron synthetic 5w40, it actually has better #'s than RTS. What I would love is schaeffers 9000, an excellent oil. Incredible shear stability, and it has the best low temp viscosity at -30. Oh well, the duron synthetic is much better then the dino rotella T I'm using now.

I don't know, but like Bob said, usually they're cost prohibitive because the oils tend to get dirty anyways. Especially with the new EGR engines.

yes, some do; mercedes, bmw, and corvette quickly come to mind. not hd diesel man's though

extended oil change intervals is about the only force driving syn engine oil, and extending intervals is a very touchy subject
