Default Driver says the truck is popping out of 3rd and 7th gear..

I've had the truck do this to me in 7th gear one time ever, and that was because I didn't have it in all the way, and it slipped out as I was coasting down a hill. I have never had a single transmission problem on this truck.

Anyway, my driver that is running the truck for me says it pops out of 3rd and 7th allmost all of the time and he has to hold it in gear to keep it from doing so.

I'll have to drive the truck myself and see if it does this when I drive it (probaly will have to wait until the weekend to get out there), however in the meantime I was wondering what could be a possible cause and a possible repair?

It's a 2000 Freightliner Classic with a 9 speed Eaton. 716k miles, always serviced and very very well maintained. I'd hate to think my new driver caused a major transmission problem in only 8 days of driving, but I suppose anything can happen..

Thanks in advance =)

Sounds like the sliding clutch that engages 3rd & 7th is worn down so severely that there's not enough engagement to keep it from "popping out" when the power (or jake) is on.

Wish I could offer better news, but the trans. is gonna have to come out and get overhauled.

I drove a truck briefly that did that, well, it did it as soon as we got it. Put it in the shop and they wound up replacing the whole tranny. Hope this isn't the issue.

Good luck.

They will usually last awhile, if you can put up with it popping out of gear all the time.
Whens the trucks at work start doing this, they always have to pull the tranny and get it rebuilt.

This commom for dump trucks and gravel trucks.

I had something similar happen with an 18 speed. Turned out to be a spring retention clip or something of the sort. Turned out the be a 47 cent part with 800 dollars of labor to put it in.

At the time I was told it was caused by ridding around with your hand on the stick shifter. I was told after you get in gear to let go of the thing.

I doubt your driver managed to do this in 8 days. I tend to believe this is just one of those things that happens in a truck with 700,000+ miles.

Check the isolation dampener bushings in the shifter. There is one large rubber one that connects the shifter to the tower and two nylon type ones with a bolt that go through tower and shifter. Mine were so wore out that you couldn't push the shifter far enough into gear (4th & 9th on a ten speed) to get it to stay in gear. You can pull the boot up and look at it from the top from inside the cab. The cross pin might have snap rings on each end, the new rebuild kit will have a bolt with a lock nut.

Might not be it but if it is it will only be about $55.00 for the parts.

Oh buy the way if you change the rubber bushing you pretty much have to burn the old bushing out.

Could also be a bent shifter fork inside the tranny - but unless you get to a reasonable good ol' boy shop outside of the left coast and northeast the insane labor rates make it not worth doing anything but a reman swap or rebuild  . Them good ol' boys can put in a fork or single gear for $200 or so if that is all that broke 8) . If it was driver error the rest of the tranny might be OK?

Well I'm too close to going into labor to drive the truck myself, but I got another O/O at my company who agreed to take it out for a test run tomorrow to see if it does this when he drives. I still want to think my driver dosen't get it fuly into gear, see what the other guy thinks tomorrow and will update. Thanks for the input so far guys.

I'll bet the same, he's being too rough on the transmission, shifting too fast.

Straighten him out! You're a pissed of woman pre-labor!

Could be the shift boot binding up too. I drove a truck for years where the boot would get stiff in cold weather, and I'd have trouble getting it all the way in that particular hole. I used to have to finesse it a little if I was going to be riding in that gear for awhile. I put a lot of miles on that truck, and wore out about everything *but* the transmission. Of course now, I wasn't hauling any real weight with that truck.
