I have both 4 and 9. i liked 4 better. 9 would like lock up and stall out at times. it would just sit there trying to find route. I ended up just using 4 most of the time unless in Canada. On 9 i could never find the truck stops that 4 had in the blue color icons. I needed to call ALK but never did. Did you ever have any of these problems with 9 running on XP?

Why? Not a single one of the programs I use on a daily basis will run natively on Linux.

A lot of programs don't show that they are Vista compatible but they are. I use Street Atlas USA 2008 plus the included GPS on my Vista laptop with no problem. I have not fround a program yet that won't work under Vista. Some programs have to Run as Administrator. (Just right click)
Some of my games run better under XP compatiblilty. (right click, click properties, click compatibility tab, then check box that says Windows XP SP2) Theses problems are easily solved and Vista SP1 will be out in mid January that will fix alot of the app compatiblilty issues.

As far as Toshiba. My last laptop was a Toshiba and I burned it up after 4 years of constant use. I sat in the passenger seat and ran every day.
My newest one is an HP because it was cheap and it does what I need it to do. I bought it at Best Buy on sale with a good rebate. Best Buy is a great place to shop. Just stay away from Circuit City. Their people are paid on commision and they will sell you the most expensive item to make them more money.

I'm planning on building a PC desktop for my truck, instead of another laptop. I seldom ever take the laptop out of the truck anyway....too risky
chaining it to a table inside the T/S to go take a whiz...or have a waitress spill something on it at the table.

Anyway, the main things one should do with a desktop to make it mobile are:

the 3.5in Hard drives need to be replaced with 2.5(mobile) HD drives---simple adapter---buy at Fry's Electric.

cooling----buy a liquid cooling system-- sticking PC back in a cabinet--very bad ideal.

then, 15in flat panel combo TV/DVD player with monitor hook-up.

wireless keypad & trackball

For the same price as an mid-priced (low performance) laptop--you can have a Kick-butt high RAM high performance desktop.
