Default How long?

I started driving OTR in '95 and went to driving local about 3 1/2 years ago. Will not really local but I shuttle trailers from warehouse to warehouse with a city truck. I put less then 30 miles a day on truck, I drop and hook 60+ times a day, the climbing in and out of truck is really getting old. Question: I am thinking about going back over the road first of the year and I was wondering if I would need to be retrained. What would be the limit of not driving OTR and then come back to it. I am just starting to look around for a new job and any advice would be helpful.

I went thru the same thing 2 years ago. After driving local for 3.5 yrs nobody wanted to hire me. A Crete recruiter who used to frequent this site pm'd me and said if I was willing to go out with a trainer for 2 weeks of refresher they would hire me. So here I am.

It seemed to me that 3 years was the absolute maximum time frame to be out of OTR in order to be hired by someone.

CFI, according to Chritine there, will require you to get at least 4-6 mos recent experience and then you'll have to go out with a trainer also, before they'll bring ya on... thats what she told me earlier this year....

Good luck

They seemed to be kinda slow for the 7 years I was with CFI. They look at 120K miles a year as average, and that was with me staying out upwards of 2 months at a time. Heck, now I get 150K miles a year, by the house a once or twice a week, and off on the weekends. I average up to 3200 miles a week and get paid more per mile than I ever saw at CFI. Drop and hook at one end and live load at the other with absolutely no touch. The big plus is being with a smaller sized company that treats you like family and not just a truck number. 8 years at this company now and still CFI is a joke.

CFI never came close. I took Herb Schmidt's advice and didn't "settle for less" by staying at CFI.
