I worked briefly for TA and am kinda dissapointed that I left. They seemed to be very good through the orientation and the new driver training (except for my trainer). I am thinking about going back, but I would need to go out again with a trainer, so hoprfully I dont end up with the same one that I had the last go round. I dunno, miles are good and the pay is decent for a newbie, so who knows. Better than starting over with Swift or USX.

Default Talk to Johnny...

Hey spencerian. I am all for doing what you have to in life, but have you contacted Johnny, the owner of TA? Believe it or not, he will listen. Don't go through dispatch to do it though. I have met him many times in the past and he does actually care about miles for his drivers. A friend of mine is a dispatcher there and he confermed to me that the management team only tells Johnny what info they (the mgt team) thinks he wants to hear. So, he may not be hearing the whole story about his drivers. Since he use to drive, he understands. If you truely want to stay with TA, stop by and talk to him. (or call him directly) As you may know, his office is one big window with no doors, just for this reason. Give it a try. What's the worst that could happen? Good luck.

That is a great point! Actually, Johnny came to our school class as a recruiter! He never mentioned that he was the owner. We only found out that information from the grape vine. That is a good point, what is the worst that can happen?

I didn't intend to give up. If you read the last part of my first post it says that my DM showed some effort, and in my book that deserves some credit. I have had this new DM for the past month. So this is not "a bad week". It is steady consistent lack of communication.

Also, to me it doesn't feel like I am closing doors. I now have 6 months experience. I have been in contact with several companies that wouldn't hire me before, but now are ringing my phone.

On a side note, I am sitting in Grand Rapids waiting for a load that will be available at 1pm. I was empty yesterday at 2pm. So it's only 23 hours UNPAID without a load.
TransAm is not a great company and I can understand you wanting to pursue new options , but you definately should wait until you get your full year experience in , this will give you many more options . Take weeks if not months finding the right fit for you as a driver with the best company for you . I don't find myself feeling bad at all for drivers that just sign on with anybody because there in a hurry to try something new because it fits there need that day . and try all your local sunday papers , good luck
A few months ago Craiglist added a "transport" category for jobs; depending on your area it could be worth watching. Watching the Reno ads I see lots of the usual high turnover local stuff with a few good jobs per week.

You may also want to cold call the terminal managers for LTLs, Foodservice, Cement, etc in your area. Many of those jobs in smaller markets are never posted.

I quit TransAm too. The amount of swaps limited my productivity and the dispatching was terrible. I had 4 swaps a week and the guy I had to swap with didn't show up till the next day. Sometimes a driver was waiting on me to show up a day prior, but I only was informed of the swap that same day. The amount of downtime from live loads and live unloads and dealing with lumpers was dissappointing.

Dealing with the refrigerator unit just adds maintenance downtime in addition to the truck, but more so.

And there are drivers that think TransAm is the best company in the world. So don't ask them. But if you do, ask who else they have worked for. Ask how many felonies they have. When I was in Olathe last I talked to about 6 drivers. All had felonies. Only one had less than 2 felonies.
I sat there for 6 hours. Then I finally dropped the trailer, and went to the truckstop. Showered, slept for 4 hours, and had a meal.
Now I am back at Cargill. Only to find that someone set the reefer back to 26 degrees. Now I wait some more.
On a side note, I am sitting in Grand Rapids waiting for a load that will be available at 1pm. I was empty yesterday at 2pm. So it's only 23 hours UNPAID without a load.
Now you see why the turnover rates are so sky-high in OTR.

Run away from TransAm. Stay FAR FAR away from over-the-road trucking. You and your family deserve better than that.
Now I am just about sick of this. I drove my arse off to get this load I just had delivered. 1400 miles in 2 days. Now I get my new load. It picks up in TWO days 150 miles away. TWO DAYS!!! at 1pm!!

That will be 50 hours without a load! Sure I might get layover pay at a big $50 per 24 hours.

The load I pick up is 150 miles away. At 1pm on Tuesday. It drops in Odessa Texas at 12:01 am on Friday. That means 2 things....
1) I have 35 hours to run 1422 miles. Another TIGHT run.
2) I won't get paid for this run because it will be after midnight Thursday. So my pay for this week will be for the in initial 1400 miles for a week.

1400 times 32cpm... $437.50

Awesome.

Are you beginning to feel like maybe "bucking conventional wisdom" is not the right way to do things? That was said in a friendly and polite manner, by the way.

Might I suggest that if you leave there, that you either call CFI at 1-800-641-4748 and speak with Christine Lathan or another recruiter...tell them Skywalker sent you. (Nothing in it for me...not a recruiter, nor do I work there any more...their just a good company) Or, find out if you can get on with Knight. Either would be a better deal than you are getting now.

Best of Luck!!

Hey Skywalker, do you think CFI would even look at him with his work history? I doubt if Crete would. If they did hire him it would be on the stipulation that he agree to go out with a trainer for a few weeks.
