I guess if you know you'll always be slighted 7-10% you can quickly factor that in and just count on whatever is left. Often, whatever is left is still a fine wage. If you make 38 cpm you just have to keep it in your head that you really only make 34-35 cpm. But why the dishonesty?
I drive for Landstar and sometimes I get very accurate miles and other times it can be Rand McNally Household movers guides. Recently, I booked a couple of longer loads right on the edge of what I thought was too cheap. When freight is down and/or you are in a bad freight area, you've got to dig a little to find freight. I took these borderline loads only to find out later that I'd be giving them 150 and 180 miles of diesel fuel, tires...and time and effort for free for the privilege of hauling their freight. Had they been high paying loads, I'd have considered myself still to the good and have gone along happily. But, since they lied to me about the miles, that is, they used HHM guide miles, I was hauling freight I'd have turned down had they told me the rate per mile based on what everyone knows I really had to run.
