Anything but bugs... that is.
Your right about foreign cuisine in the states being "Americanized"... It is a shame too, because they tend to bland down the dishes...

I've even noticed that if you buy shrimp now, they don't have any taste to them anymore. They're now farm raising shrimp, and they must clean the taste right out of them. Because if you get fresh from the sea shrimp, they usually have that ocean flavor to them. Now, they have no flavor...

I don't know what the shrimp farmers are doing to them, but, they just are not the same as the shrimp you used to be able to buy years ago...

What drives me nuts about americanized mexican food is that it's way spicier than actual authentic mexican food. I've eaten authentic mexican and it's not nearly as flavorful as what we eat in our local shops.

And don't believe that just because everyone working in the kitchen is mexcian/latin that they are cooking authentic fare. Remember, the general American's idea of mexican is Taco Bell....

I can't wait to get back out to New Mexico sometime and visit my friends there who make REAL mexican food. YUM YUM!

You will find great Mexican fare in the border States. When I lived in S.Texas, and /or S.Arizona...the food was as good or better than across the border. Most places down there also speak predominantly Spanish and the music is Latino...so you even feel you are in Mexico.

Same deal with any ethnic fare. Much will depend on where you seek it out.

When I lived in the Bay Area, for authentic Chinese...you really want to go to San Francisco and hop the cable car into China Town.

For Greek...go to Detroit, and go to a restaurant in Greek Town. You will sip an ouzo, fancy the Greek language and people, and top off your wonderful meal with baklava....maybe even get drawn into a dance on the street to the music and friendly atmosphere.

For shrimp, crab, or crawfish, catfish..etc...you kiddin' me! Man...you need to visit ...........saaaaay...Lafayette, Louisana...cumsa? Dem Cajun's know how to feed ya!! And...if you make a friend with a Cajun...you have a friend for life. They know how to live and Partaaay!

Come to Leland...my hometown...and I will treat you to some mouthwatering smoked salmon...or some tender venison....eh?

Yes sir! I made the mistake of eating Mexican food in Bismark,ND one time while I was up there. Never again. :P

There is a small place in Perryton,Tx. I dont know if they are still open, but it's one of the best Mexican food places that I've ever been to.

Maybe the next big thing will be that someone creates an international foods restaurant, and every dish is made as it would be from it's country of origin.

Would be a great idea, save you having to travel around looking for one particular restaurant, that everyone in your group could agree on...

Ah, variety... It's the spice of life...
