There are days when I hate this job, and there are days I adore it.
I hate being away from home so much, but there are times when I need a change of scenery, and what could be better for that than trucking?
I hate being looked down on by the illiterate nabobs who work in dispatch, but I love the fact that I only have to speak to my boss on rare occasions, because its assumed that I am competent to do my job without supervision (try finding a job with THAT benefit anywhere else!)
I hate the storms that endanger my life, but I also think storms are some of the most beautiful sights you can see anywhere, and lately it seems like I never have to worry about missing one.
I hate the selfish nature of the average four wheeler, but I love being pleasantly surprised by them (on rare occasions) and after all, SOMEBODY has to watch out for them -- Lord knows the average V.I.P. office temp commuter with a cellphone surgically attached to their very important ear couldn't survive merging into highway traffic on their own.
I hate what trucking does to our bodies, but I love the look of shock on the faces of yuppies who spy me excercising at rest stops. Its almost like they spotted a unicorn.
I hate the fact that I usually feel compelled to turn off the CB these days because of all the cursing and vileness, but I love the fact that once in a while you can still run across a person who is intelligent, fun to talk to, and going your way.
I hate the states where the DOT and CHP seem to have been groomed to sit on people and squash their spirit, but truth be told, I still run into more decent cops than bad, and that gives me hope.
I guess you could say trucking is what you make of it, that is, which side of the coin you choose to look at is how you will perceive it.
B.T.W. I voted "Like it but want to do something else." Not because its a bad job, but just because I'm restless and want to try a new experience.
