Auto racing safety
#1
Watched something on The History Channel tonight about some of the innovations that have been made on auto racing safety. Tires, personal restraint systems, wheels, so many things. And they ran a segment on the tragic race in 2001 where Dale Earnhardt lost his life. Every time I see that I want to cry. No one will ever come close to Dale Sr. He'll forever be The Man!

It is really a shame how NASCAR drug it's feet on safety until Sr. got killed. Every other series had already made the HANS device mandatory, NASCAR was studying it. Same with the SAFER barriers, It had already been in use at INDY, and proven to work, yet it was being studied. NASCAR's not being proactive on safety cost Sr. his life.

That and his blocking for Jr. and Mikey.

Think of this, had Dale said, "Yeah we should prolly use this Hans thing," he would be alive today and NASCAR would have mandated the use sooner. Dale was the biggest non-supporter of it, he was quoted as saying that that device would kill him before any crash would. He was quoted on that at Indy the year before he died.

Also, it's funny how they come out with newer safety stuff when someone gets really, really hurt, or killed. I guess, that's the only way to know if you need to update, or change stuff. |
