I took the dmv cdl manual home on Thursday and passed the knowledege tests for class A, doubles and triples, hazmat and air brakes the next day. A few days later I took the tests for the P endorsement and tanker. I looked at the book once and passed the knowledge test for the s endorsement. I got a perfect pretrip and road test for the school bus. I missed several for the tractor pretrip. This isn't rocket science.

What is the bas cost of operating a truck then?

there are plenty of posts on this board that list (in itemized detail) most costs associated with operating a trucking company. I put several of them there myself but I don't do it any more. Do a search.

With current fuel prices, my cost, on a per mile basis is approximately $1.80.*

That is an impossible question to answer. There is no set base cost for operating a truck, just like people have told you ad nauseum. The formula for calculating your base cost has already been listed in one of the 300 threads you've started on this subject. It included things you didn't want to include, hence the fact that you are still arguing about it.

No go find the formula that has already been posted, and do the math yourself. And so help me - if you figure wages by what you think a company would pay an inexperienced driver, I'm going to find you and slap you across the head with a wet noodle. The entire point of being in business is so that you aren't earning company driver wages. If you and your daddy only want to do the minimum required, then go be company drivers and leave us businesspeople alone, because you will only be part of the problem.

I wanted to. It could be profitable. There are problems.
1. Progressive is the only game in town for new drivers. They limit the area to a 500 mile radius. That is not the best for team driving. If we could drive the 48 states then maybe.
2. Insurance would cost me $700/mo.
3. He gets on my nerves. The week I went with him I was dying to get home.

As far as getting my own truck. I could. My wife hated me not being home. She works and had to adjust her schedule to accomadate me being gone. The kids missed me. No one was home to do chores.

So, I decided to keep my sort of regular job and drive a school bus on the side.

I just got the S endorsement. The school district where I was hired Thursday uses a third party tester. I used a school district bus for the test. You just can't walk in and get the s endorsement. You need to give the dmv a form from the school (2c) to even take the knowledge test.
