When I buy a truck and drive drive it home from the dealership what would I need to be legal? It would be a 150 mile one way, drive and would be on the interstate with scales.

Currently I have a CDL but no medical card.

 

You will need liability insurance and a temporary tag. I have taped a copy of the bill of sale in my right side windshield and not had a problem, but a drive out tag from the dealer is better. Check with your insurance person and see if they can arrange for liability insurance to get home. You will need bobtail insurance or unladen liability insurance to cover you when not hooked to a trailer, but insurance companies usually require that you be leased to a carrier to qualify for this type of insurance. As a last resort, the dealer might be able to help with the temporary insurance, but that is usually more expensive than you can find on your own.

A trip permit is for one state. You will need to have a trip permit for each state. However, if you have a temporary plate (drive out tag) and don't have a load on the truck, you should not need a trip permit.
